Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

Hi Jedi_Exile,

I checked the smart_history.log and the only errors listed are command timeouts on a specific drive, see the log data below: -

model                 serial                realloc_sect  realloc_evnt  spin_retry_cnt  ioedc       cmd_timeouts  pending_sect  uncorrectable_err  ata_errors  timestamp   time
--------------------  --------------------  ------------  ------------  --------------  ----------  ------------  ------------  -----------------  ----------  ----------  -------------------
ST2000DL003-9VT166    5YD6D34E              0             0             0               0           30            0             0                  0           1449269415  2015-12-04 22:50:15

The diagnostics in RAIDar state the same thing, see below: -

  • Disk 3 has 30 Command Timeouts

The NAS freezes up before each resync completes and the resync starts each time I restart the NAS (by plugging out the plug).  Unfortunately, I've no available discs to back up my data so all my eggs are in one basket I'm afraid.

I've turned off anti-virus and it has started to resync again, any further information to help troubleshoot this issue is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Stig

Do the command timeouts go up every time?

Hi StephenB,

Yes the timeouts are increasing but there are not that many of them, see below: -

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

I am wondering if the command timeout is what is creating the freeze.

How could I determine if the timeout the cause of the freeze/

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

There might be info in the logs - that depends on if they can be updated when the freeze event occurs.

But it seems related - the count climbs a bit with each restart.

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

Hi StephenB,

It looks like the resync issue could be related to disk 3 as I received the error message below.  What are my options and risks to replace this drive if I do not have any means of taking a backup or moving my data to an alternative location?

Thu Dec 10 2015 6:21:45 Disk: Detected high command timeouts: [33] on disk 3 (Internal) [ST2000DL003-9VT166, 5YD6D34E]. This condition often indicates an impending failure. Be prepared to replace this disk to maintain data redundancy.

For further information I've uploaded the logs to the links below: -

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

Hi!
Last resync went smoothly and I was able to transfer 1TB from RN104 to PC. Now I thought that everything was Ok. Yesterday I should backup images from the PC to the RN104. This went well for about 30 minutes, then it froze again. I finally had to pull out the cord to reset it. Then it started to resync.

Frankly, RAID is not enough to keep your data safe.  I am always concerned when people say they don't have a proper backup plan in safe.  You can start with the most critical data, if you organize the shares to isolate that data from the rest.

You can replace the drive.  The risk is that you lose all redundancy until the system resyncs.  If another disk failure (or system failure) happens during the process, the data volume likely will be lost.  If that were to happen, Data Recovery might get all (or some of it) back, but that would be expensive.  Netgear folks are in a better position to assess the severity of the risk from the logs than I am (btw- usually logs are emailed to them, not posted).

I'd recommend a WD20EFRX over the Seagate DL or DM.

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

H StephenB,

Thanks for the advice I've ordered a WD40EFRX disc as a replacement, hopefully I'll still be able to use the drive that is failing for backup purposes.

Re resiliance and the risk of losing data, I didn't mention that I'm running firmware version 6.4.1 and the RAID is configured as X-RAID.  Should this reduce my risk of losing data if I hot swap the bad disc when the new one arrives?

Also if I do obtain a disc to backup my data before swaping out the bad disc can I use the eSATA port on the NAS to transfer data to another HDD or is this eSATA port just for connecting another ReadyNAS?

Last question (I hope) I disabled AntiVirus, disabled scheduled volume services and restarted the NAS. It has been resyncing for 20 hours and is approx 50% complete with another 20 hours to go.  This is the furthest that the resync has completed in a while, if the resync completes can I hot swap the bad disc with minimal risk of losing any data?

Thanks again for your support and apologies for all the questions.

Cheers, Stig

No, there is no difference in the risk.  Standard XRAID is single-disk redundancy.  Both FlexRaid and XRAID are built on the same linux tools underneath.

But I always do recommend backups ...

You can use the eSata, though some users have reported trouble doing that.  USB 3.0 performance should be about the same, and seems to be more popular these days.

You can also copy over the network of course - so if you have eSata on a PC you can fall back to using that.

I'd say yes.  Your SMART stats on the other drives look fine.  Though (as noted above) I always suggest having an up-to-date backup, esp. when changing drives and upgrading firmware.

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

Every 2 or 3 days my 104 is freezing and I've to remove the power cord and insert it back to restart it. And then the re-sync starts again, which takes 3-4 days to finish, eventually to hang up.

This has happened more than 10 times and now I'm tired. Maybe I will shutdown my NAS permanently and use the data from elsewhere (which is not possible).

Ever since, I upgraded to 6.4.1 I'm facing this, why in the world I went ahead and upgraded. I was good with 6.1.9 for so many months.

I don't know what to do???? Request the admins and gurus at Netgear for help.

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

I thought I might be past the freezes - but apparently not. Just had another freeze while copying about 6GB of data over to my RN104 running 6.4.1. Had to pull the plug, and now I'm looking at 73 hours for the resynch.

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

Damn, just tried to copy a 3 GB file, and it hanged on me. The re-sync had just finished about 25% from the previous hang, and now everyting from the beginning.

Now, I've just pulled the plug and don't intend to turn it on until there is a remedy for this.

Netgear, if you are listening, please come out with a valid and permanant solution.

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

Finally after upgrading the firmware to 6.4.2 Beta and copying tons of GB's through 2 weeks it's working perfectly. There were no hangups and any such things. Only issue I found was a toll in the copying speed sometimes, which can be lived with.

Thanks to the team for listening and coming out with a remedy.

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

Hi saketb,

Thanks for the feedback. Does the speed issue you noticed only happening on SMB (Windows)? If you will disable the AV feature, will it make a difference?

Kind regards,

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

Yes, it only happens in SMB (Windows). The AV & Snapshots are disabled from the start, as I felt that the system cannot handle these operations along with other running apps.

Re: Rn104 resync & freeze issue

Hi saketb,

Thanks for the quick response. How many PCs are affected? Can you tell us their OS? Also, describe the issue that you've noticed (Was ist the speed in opening up the files or folders? Copying files? or etc.)

Looking forward to your response.

Kind regards,
