Remotely download torrents
Ok currently I'm using utorrent on my pc along with utorrent remote on my android phone....this allows me to login to my utorrent remotely and start files downloading even if I'm not at home on the same network.
I was wondering if there is anything available like this for the readynas 102? I know we have transmission and transmission remote, but I have to be at home to use it correct?
I would love to be able to setup something on my NAS that would allow me to download torrents from anywhere using my cellphone app

Re: Remotely download torrents
What if you try to open port 443 on your existing router then point it to the local IP Address of your NAS and take note of your WAN IP Address (It should be a Public IP Address). In this way, you could remotely access the web-GUI of your NAS through your celphone by typing https://Your_WAN_IP_Address/admin on a browser then you could access the apps installed in your NAS like Transmission, etc.
Hope my suggestion helps 😄

Re: Remotely download torrents
Forward port 8181 to the NAS LAN ip in your router and use http://wanIP:8181 and just log into the transmission web interface. Suggest you change the default username / password first though.

Re: Remotely download torrents
Its the external address of your router. Your router's admin page displays it, and you can also get if from this web page: http://www.whatismyip.com/

If you plan to use this regularly, you should set up ddns (noip.com still offers a free account). Your ISP will change your public IP address from time to time, so accessing your nas by name is more reliable.

Re: Remotely download torrents
I'm still lost. I have my ip address and have went to it and it does load my router page from anywhere I have Internet access, but if I add ports to it... Nothing!
Example: if my ip was 68.85.54.123 it would load my compact router but if I put 68.85.54.123:8181 then it doesn't load anything.
I've tried using noip service and same results

Re: Remotely download torrents
You need to forward port 8181 to the local IP address of the NAS in the router configuration. Otherwise the router doesn't know that the 8181 traffic is supposed to go to the NAS.
What router do you have?

Re: Remotely download torrents
They have one Linksys, but several Netgear ones listed here: http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-su ... -adapters/. Linksys used to be Cisco-owned, but was sold to Belkin some years ago. So Cisco is no longer in the home networking business.
If you google the model number, you can usually find the manual. It will have instructions on setting up port forwarding.
Also, if the router supports address reservation (almost all do), then you should reserve a fixed local LAN IP address for the NAS. Otherwise the forwarding might break if the NAS ends up with a different local IP address.
