DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

Finally a new dyn dns client, D(yn)D(ns)Client, thanks WhoCares:
viewtopic.php?f=47&t=62337

    DnsOMatic - didn't work for all hosts (as promised) and used dum constant updates and we got warnings from DynDNS etc.
    DynDns - the old one, might work, never worked for me.

What are your experiences on this?
Hey Netgear, I can't understand why you don't have a dyn dns client built-in in FrontView - it amazes me. Let me remind you that it's 2012.

Dewdman42 take a look in the x86 (Intel) community add-ons forum and you'll find this thread: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=62340

Thanks a lot for that! So why are people opting to use this solution instead of DnsOMatic. Sorry for my stupid questions, but I'm learning quick.

Simply because what I wrote in the first post. The DNS-o-Matic add-on doesn't behave properly.

Damn, it seems like I will have trouble even with Whocares D(yn)D(ns)Client. I've just revived a expiration warning from DynDNS by e-mail.

DynDNS stopped being free. I have been using DDClient with no-ip.com and works fine.

Which client, D(yn)D(ns)Client by WhoCares? And what does your configuration string look like?

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

No the DynDns service used to be free in years past, but it is not longer free to use their service.

That is why i switched to DDClient and then you can sign up with one of its supported services, they have quite a few it supports. I chose no-ip.com.

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

Thanks but that was not what I asked about. Or do you use the old one:
Dyndns Client by super-poussin
viewtopic.php?f=47&t=22415

Or just the classic ddclient:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/ddclient

No-IP is not represented at DDClient support pages:
http://sourceforge.net/p/ddclient/wiki/protocols/

But my guess is that they are user friendly and support the standard config:
## single host update
protocol=noip, \
login=userlogin@domain.com, \
password=noip-password \
myhost.no-ip.biz

And I finally understood why most of my DynDNS.org addresses stopped working. The free accounts at DynDNS must be updated at least every 30 days, but not with the same IP. So that leaves me and a lot of others out. Because the dynamic IP provided by my ISP changes very seldom.

Edit: updated link to DDClients supported protocols.

Interesting. I still use my old free account, and I don't think my IP changes very often. Though I haven't really tracked it either.

Hmm, interesting. I'll see how it works with No-IP. If the same problems reoccur, it might be soemthing else, my router, firewall or ISP.

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

DynDNS allowed some people to be grandfathered in if they stayed active. So if you still have DynDNS account, don't let it expire, if it expires, no more free account.

Here's the settings I used with ddclient to enable no-ip, after signing up through their website first:

protocol=noip, \
server=dynupdate.no-ip.com, \
login=login@xyz.com, \
password=12345 \
xxxx.servebeer.com

I don't remember quite exactly how I found that. It seems like initially I also found the document you are talking about that does not list no-ip as a supported service, but then later on I did find an example config file that had a dozen or two services, including no-ip. I can't remember now. Anyway it works.

Thanks Dewdman42!
I'l update my settings with the line "server=dynupdate.no-ip.com" and hopefully it works.

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

I actually had a problem with it I didn't realize until today, it was not getting my ip from my router correctly. I updated my config file to the following and now seems to get the router ip addr correctly.

mail-failure=steve@myemail.com
# this gets our router's ip address from external service
use=web, web=checkip.amazonaws.com
protocol=noip, \
login=steve@myemail.com, \
password=xxxxx \
xxxx.servebeer.com

That being said, I also got an email from no-ip.com today saying that I have to manually click on a weblink once a month to keep the free account active. What a pain. I'm not sure why that is the case, could be that ddclient does not try to update it unless the ip changes, or something of that nature.

So two questions for everyone,

  1. Does anyone know how to make ddclient force an manual push to the provider once a month or so, in the case when the ip has not changed?

  2. Does anyone know which FREE provider does not have this annoying manual requirement once a month?

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

Thanks for the report. It actually looks like DDClient will only update when the IP address has changed unless told otherwise. So I'll add a function that will force an update every Sunday, which should be sufficient for most cases.

Great! As you might know many dyn dns service providers only allow IP update if the IP has changed (and for some you also have to update every 30 days - which is kinda like catch-22). One way to work around the problem could be to first update to a fake number and after that update to the correct/old IP.

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

Yes I noticed that when I stopped ddclient and started it again, I got an error message about trying to update with the same IP and they called it "abusive". Seems like doing a temporary change to a fake ip and then back again may be the only way, though they might required a 300 or 600 second waiting period between those changes. Not sure.

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

I have a problem, I registered a free no-ip host, installed the client and set this config:

use=web, web=checkip.amazonaws.com \
protocol=noip, \
login=username, \
password=password, \
myhost.no-ip.org

the host works correctly, the problem is that it doesn't seem to update the IP address.
I tried to change my IP but the new one has not been sent to no-ip, and I had to manually update it.

where's the problem? thanks.

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

Did you replace the login, password any host entries just for publicly posting the confg or is this what you're actually using?

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

I obviously edited them just for publicly posting the config here. 😄
I was also not use if the correct login is just "username" or "username@myemail.com", I tried both but again it doesn't seem to work.
also, can you shed some light about the commas at the end of each entry, before the backslash? in which entries they should be used?

thanks!

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

Well, it's not as obvious as you may think ... anyway, the commas should be on the end of each statement. The backslash just tells the interpreter to read the next line as a continuation of the previous one. Or in other words: Build a single line of arguments out of the block.

Re: DDClient - by WhoCares - I hope this one will work

Alright, thank you.
so, my config should be correct, right?
as I said the DNS hosts works, the only problem is that it doesn't check/update the IP address and I have to manually update it (through no-ip web interface).
