Today I tried to access the Admin page and got a message saying that my browser did not support the protocol of the page I was trying to reach. Checked on Netgear website to find that either my browser was old or my firmware was ond. My Radar is up to date.
My Firmware was v 4.2.28.
I downloaded an old version of Firefox and was able to access to admin page and install Firmware V4.2.31 however I still cannot access the Admin page with other than the old version of Firefox which comes with dire security warnings.
Is there a solution to this problem. Am I doing something dim?
If you do decide to convert the Pro 2, then you should increase the RAM to 2 GB before you begin. Shipping OS-6 NAS have at least 2 GB of RAM, your NAS only has 1 GB. Several folks have run into out-of-memory conditions after conversion. Upgrading the RAM is inexpensive (memory can be found for less than $25 USD), and is simple to do. PC3-10600 (204 PIN non-ECC SoDimm DDR3) memory should work.
The steps are:
(Optionally) make sure the latest BIOS is installed before you do the conversion. To do this you install http://www.readynas.com/download/addons/x86/4.2/BIOS_Update_Package_0.5-x86.bin as an add-on and reboot the NAS. Do this after you backup the NAS. This isn't necessary, but if you do want to update the bios it is easiest to do it prior to conversion
Basic instructions for the conversion itself are
BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP
Upload PREPR4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin as an add-on using the ReadyNAS web gui, but do not reboot afterwards (avoids the need to do manual factory resets)
Upload R4toR6_6.9.5.bin using the ReadyNAS web gui firmware update
After you upload the addon+firmware and reboot, it will update the firmware and start a factory default.
Go through the setup process on the converted NAS
Update the NAS to the current OS 6 (check for updates will work).
Restore files from the backup.
Netgear won't provide paid support on a converted NAS, so that is one consideration. There is a small risk that the process could fail, and if that were to happen it might not be possible to get the NAS running again.
The problem is that legacy ReadyNAS (4.1.x, 4.2.x, 5.3.x firmware) only support TLS 1.0, and the browsers are now requiring TLS 1.2. You'll find that internet explorer also works (as does Edge if the site is in "IE mode"). However, I don't think that will last that long.
IMO the best option for you would be to convert your NAS to run OS-6. Just ask if you need instructions on how to do that.
One warning - the 4.2.x add-on at rnxtras.com fails on systems with atom processors (which includes the Pro 2). You can still install the patch manually via SSH, using the instructions in the README.
