I have a RN31200 with one hard drive disk. How do I add a second to back up everything on the main disk?? Does it have to be the same make? What do I do? Please help.
Thanks

Hi again. Thank you for the help.
What is a hot insert ? Do I need to turn nas off or add it while on??
hot-insert means to add the new drive with the NAS running. The drive should be blank (not formatted).

Also will it mirror everything already on the first drive or just new things? I want it to copy everything I already have as I have a load of data on there.
The volume will use RAID-1, which mirrors everything (even free space).

Does it have an LED screen on the front?

If you are using the normal XRAID, then all you need to do is hot-insert a second disk. That will create a RAID-1 (mirrored) volume.
That's not quite the same as a backup btw - you should still maintain a backup of your data on a different device.

No. It needs to be the same size (or larger). But it can be a different make or model.
FWIW, NAS-purposed models (WDC Red or Seagate IronWolf) are good choices. They are intended for NAS, and cost effective.

Also will it mirror everything already on the first drive or just new things? I want it to copy everything I already have as I have a load of data on there. ? I do have a separate back up as suggested.
Many thanks
