Another RN104 crashing with OS6.2+

Hi

I've been experiencing frequent lockups with my RN104 since the update to 6.2 late Nov last year. The lockup has been occurring once every week at its best, and more commonly a few times a day its worst. I've kept it up to date since, hoping that the updates would fix the issue, and have taken to keeping the latest beta version installed (they couldn't possibly be worse than the 'stable' firmware). It is thus running 6.2.3-T1751.

In short, the system completely locks up, there is no response from the web admin interfrace, SMB or other protocols. RAIDar is no help; the NAS might as well be unplugged from the network. The power button does nothing, neither with a short press nor held for some period (I gather this would normally force the power off). The only thing I can do is pull the plug.

The I keep the antivirus off, generally (since 6.2). The only new feature is the disk spin down, so I'm trying now with that switched off to see it that helps. The loganalyzer app often shows numerous repeated opensuse.Snapper log entries, and before occasionally high number of snapperd entries, even when the system should be idle and not recording snapshots (these are set to be weekly for only two of my shares). This phenomena usually occurrs shortly before the system goes offline.

I'll send my logs through...

Kind regards, Andrew

It seems that your concern is related to this forum thread: https://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopi ... &start=285

You may want to try to update the firmware to Beta FW v6.2.3 T1721 and it might help make your RN104 stable: http://www.readynas.com/download/beta/r ... 21-arm.img

Seemed like your NAS have the symptoms of the "freezing" issue found on some RN104. Best bet is to contact support so that they can have your device analyzed.

Re: Another RN104 crashing with OS6.2+

I contacted support in early January, and was told, in short, that my 90 days complimentary support has long expired, and that if I want to escalate it I need to pay. Tough luck, in short. Netgear's software update caused a problem and I need to pay for support to resolve issues it causes. If I can't resolve the issues soon, i'll been seeing about exchanging it. This is why after more than 3 months I've finally come to the forums to seek further counsel.

Thanks for the link Ixa, I'd been following many related threads on the topic, but the recent developments of that one eluded me. For what it's worth, I did have 6.2.3 T1721 installed at some point and it didn't resolve my lock up issues, or I'd have stuck with it. That said I think it was one of the more stable releases I've tried, so I'll set about installing that one again if it locks up. It's been up since I restarted and disabled the disk-spindown.

Thanks all, Andrew

Re: Another RN104 crashing with OS6.2+

It seems I spoke too soon, it's just crashed. I'm installing T1721 as I write. I may have been mistaken; my logs don't show me having installed it previously. I must have downloaded it but not gotten to installing it until a later version had been released. I think it was 1652 or 1703 which was the most stable I'd used.

No crashes yet; T1721 certainly seems to be plenty stable, even with disk spin-down and snapshots enabled. Lets hope it stays this way until the problem is resolved for good 🙂

Good to know that's so far so good using the Beta FW v6.2.3-T1721 on your NAS 😄

Just continue to monitor it as well.

Re: Another RN104 crashing with OS6.2+

It's still going! One thing I've noticed is that the disk temeratures sit in the low to mid 30s, whereas before they had been sitting around 39-42 degrees. I suppose it's because the disk spin-down is actually working in this FW, though I'm surprised it's not even lower than that given it's had no reason to be active for over a day now.

Presently disks 2 and 3 are running at 36 whilst 1 and 4 are at 32. The four degree difference is a bit puzzling, it's normally only around 2 degrees different.
