Cannot discover ReadyNAS 526. Both machines on same network. Brand new with blank drives.

I've just turned on my new ReadyNAS 526 with fresh drives installed. The machine shows 13.6 TB available. I've connected the device and my laptop to a switch on a university network. They are the only two things on the switch. I'll confess that I don't fully understand subnets, but two online calculators have told me that the machines are on the same network. Nevertheless, the machine refuses to be discovered. I have of course ensured that the device agrees that discovery is on. Other sources have suggested that sometimes the ReadyNAS doesn't like your browser, so I've tried this using firefox on my standard linux machine as well as firefox and MS edge on a W10 machine. I'm not sure what to do.

Let's say I try to do this offline with the RAIDair software. After I configure the device, can I log in via the internet using its IP address?

Cheers.

Wow. Didn't realize that I could just use the IP address and the standard password.

What, then, is the point of discovery?

Discovery is necessary for NASes without a display.  Are you sure you want your NAS directly on the university network, not behind a router?  Or does the university not allow routers on the network?

Actually it is behind a router, which is what the switch is connected to. Might this create problems?

Not if you use RAIDar. So much easier imho.

Sounds to me like the ReadyCLOUD traffic is dropped somewhere on the network.

If you go on the GUI and click on Check for Updates (on home page). Do you see a pop-up telling you there is or isn't an update (which means your NAS can reach Internet) or do you get an error or no pop-up at all (wait for a bit)?

Yes, I have already installed the latest firmware. At this point, the device works as I want it to. I just don't see why I would go through the hassle of discovering the device if I can just access it via the IP address.

I'm not asking you to update the Firmware. I'm asking you to use this trick to confirm if your ReadyNAS can reach Internet or not.

OK. If you don't want to use ReadyCLOUD, then yes, you can stop there.

I guess I should have specified that firmware was updated via the internet.
