Cannot see files in shares

Dears,

I'm new in the NAS world.
I have bought a ReadyNAs 102 with 2 x 2Tb.

What is important for me is the storage size, not the security as such.
So I have configured each disk a a volume in JBOD.
No RAID 0 or 1.

Then I have created shares.
Idea is to have differnt users having different permissions on shares.
ex:
share "download" => r/w everyone
share Parents => r/w parents only
share Children => Children may manage their content but parent should also have r/w access.
On each, only SMB is activated.

Anyway here is teh problematic:
From my Mac I had mounted the "download": ok
I have created a subfolder in it "iMac": OK
I have moved my "local" download folder files from iMac to share: OK (my local drive was almost full)
I have even tried to play a stored video: OK

I mounted the "download" share on a Win PC: OK
I created a subfolder "PC": OK. I have seen it from the PC.

After having shutdown everything while on end-of-year holidays, I am encountering issues after starting up everything.

If I mount the share on my iMac, it is empty(Grr). Panic! Where are my files?
If I access it from the Web Gui, idem. No files.
But via "recovery" mode I see the iMac folder (dated from 22/12). Not the PC one.

I'm lost!

1) I don't remember having done an action that could have led to the deletion of the content of the share
2) How to recover the files and make them again available?
3) Where is the PC subfolder?

Well, has anybody encounter such an issue?

And what are the best practices or recommandations to apply when using shares?

Thanks a lot in advance

Re: Cannot see files in shares

Are the files there when you browse the shares from the RN102's admin web ui?

Re: Cannot see files in shares

No
share is empty in "normal browse" mode;
Buy if I click on "recovery" then I can select a date in the past (22/12) and my subfolder is there.
The came my question 2) here above: how to put them back available in "normal" browse mode?

Re: Cannot see files in shares

To get the files back, look for the newest snapshot that shows your all your files (in recovery browse mode) and choose "rollback" for that snapshot.

The most likely cause for the loss is that either someone (or someone's computer) with access deleted the data. A NAS bug is possible I guess, but I haven't seen this happen with my RN102, and I haven't seen it reported by any other users.

BTW, you should have a backup strategy for your data. One of the benefits of consolidating storage onto the NAS is that you can back the data up more efficiently.

Re: Cannot see files in shares

Thanks.
I will "rollback" once at home.

For the backup strategy, as said I will backup on USB on regular basis some of the shares where "documents" will be stored.
But for now these folders are still empty 😉

Re: Cannot see files in shares

Oops I clicked on Send too fast.

... some shares like "download" etc... are more on a NAS to share their content between PC's/Mac/TV...

Re: Cannot see files in shares

OK back with my story.
Rollback done. Files accessible from my iMAC. Cool.
But the strange thing is that via the NAS web gui, it is still empty.
Only visible in the snapshot of 22/12 !?!?!

Completely lost.

And by the way I now see that my "move" (= copy the delete) from local disk to NAS made me loose a lot of files.
I assume I had too fast considered that the copy was done before deleting the original folder.
I see 60% of the file names but with zero byte size...
Strange. Not a big deal this time as it was only the download folder. (a big part of its content can still be taken from TimeMachine (towards local disk)

I will have to test more deep that NAS thing because for now I am not yet confident with it....
I cannot afford to loose the ones that are important for me...

I think you already know the answer to that - you need to back up files that are important to you.
