Constant Spinups when using Seagate 2TB ST32000542AS drives

I have been experiencing frequent disk spinups with my unit that are unrelated to any other activities in the system. No one is accessing the system at these times and no tasks are scheduled. For example, here is an excerpt from my system.log; I have not omitted any lines, these are the only entries in this section:
Oct 22 00:08:45 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Spinning down disks.
Oct 22 00:08:55 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Disks spinning up after 0 minutes.
Oct 22 00:49:55 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Spinning down disks.
Oct 22 00:53:11 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Disks spinning up after 3 minutes.
Oct 22 01:34:11 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Spinning down disks.
Oct 22 02:05:13 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Disks spinning up after 31 minutes.
Oct 22 02:46:11 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Spinning down disks.
Oct 22 03:06:08 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Disks spinning up after 19 minutes.
Oct 22 03:46:32 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Spinning down disks.
Oct 22 04:00:13 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Disks spinning up after 13 minutes.
Oct 22 04:40:34 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Spinning down disks.
Oct 22 04:50:46 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Disks spinning up after 10 minutes.
Oct 22 05:43:59 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Spinning down disks.
Oct 22 06:13:56 JitterBug noflushd[1702]: Disks spinning up after 29 minutes.

I have been troubleshooting this for over two months with the Support Team and they are telling me now it is related to the model of disks, which I chose directly off your HCL. I am requesting a high priority be given to this issue, as I am told other users have the same problem and it is bad for my disks and wasting my electricity to constantly spinup the disks for no reason. It was suggested to me that I post here as well to request a resolution.

Please Help! Support Case #13478254

Re: Constant Spinups when using Seagate 2TB ST32000542AS dri

Could it be related to the router? My Due is connected to the ADSL router through an ethernet cable. When the disk is spinned down, if I shut down the router, the Due will be waken up with the disk spinning up. If the connection is not stable, the Due could get wrong network signals I think.

The connection is very stable. Theoretically, I supposed it could be related in some way to the network, but I see no sign of that in any of the log files. Do you see entries in a log file indicating the network problems before the subsequent spinup?

Re: Constant Spinups when using Seagate 2TB ST32000542AS dri

I'll do a test when I get a chance. Looking through my system.log did not find a spinning up before shut down pattern. Instead I found quite some of this:

Nov 21 09:38:41 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning down /dev/hdc.
Nov 21 09:38:41 nas noflushd[633]: Spindown of /dev/hdc cancelled.
Nov 21 10:51:04 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning down /dev/hdc.
Nov 21 10:51:11 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning up /dev/hdc after 0 minutes.
Nov 21 11:21:34 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning down /dev/hdc.
Nov 21 11:23:09 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning up /dev/hdc after 1 minutes.
Nov 21 11:53:32 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning down /dev/hdc.
Nov 21 11:56:58 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning up /dev/hdc after 3 minutes.
Nov 21 12:00:05 nas ntpdate[1464]: no server suitable for synchronization found
Nov 21 12:30:50 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning down /dev/hdc.
Nov 21 12:49:28 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning up /dev/hdc after 18 minutes.
Nov 21 13:19:50 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning down /dev/hdc.
Nov 21 16:41:40 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning up /dev/hdc after 201 minutes.
Nov 21 16:50:03 nas ntpdate[2051]: step time server 207.211.82.130 offset -0.062223 sec
Nov 21 19:08:46 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning down /dev/hdc.
Nov 21 19:08:46 nas noflushd[633]: Spindown of /dev/hdc cancelled.
Nov 21 19:40:18 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning down /dev/hdc.
Nov 21 19:40:25 nas noflushd[633]: Spinning up /dev/hdc after 0 minutes.

But I never remember I have heard anything abnormal like the log tells. Maybe I just did not notice. Weird.

Has this disk spindown problem been resolved in any of the newer firmware upgrades?
