Copy of large files to NAS NV+ V2 issues?

Hi All,

I have just recently bought a Nas NV+ V2 (RND4000) and have fully populated it with 4x1Tb drives. I'm now trying to copy (via a 3rd party backup) to the new NAS some large files (average 1GB) and I keep getting "ERROR: Error copying to destination file: The disk is full. (error 39)". It does not happen all the time and if I queue several files at one one maybe only one out of 10 will fail. The copy process then continues with the next file and works OK.

They are copying at a speed of about 4.3 MB/s with network utilisation at around 60%.

I don't have any solutions yet but just posting the point to see if others are seeing the problem?

Thanks

Re: Copy of large files to NAS NV+ V2 issues?

What version of RAIDiator is running on the ReadyNAS? You can check e.g. in Info (far right) column in RAIDar (http://www.readynas.com/downloads)

I presume with those speeds you are connected over wireless?

Do you get the same issue if not using a 3rd party backup but doing a simple file copy? Not all backup software is compatible with network backups.

What about if you try a direct-connection using a known working Cat5e or newer ethernet cable?: http://sphardy.com/web/directconnect

Re: Copy of large files to NAS NV+ V2 issues?

Hello,

Thanks for your input.

The NV+ is running version 4.1.8
The NV+ V2 is running 5.3.2

They are connect via the LAN, not wireless, but I must admit there are two switches between them. One is a Gigabit switch the other is a 100Mb switch, both are Linksys models. I rarely get transfer rates above 8-10 MB/s, the switches are approx 50 feet apart.

The copy seems to work fine the other way (ie from the V2 to the NV+) but this is not really the way I wanted to run the NAS systems. I'll try removing the 100Mb switch and additionally try some standard copies to see if there is any difference and post an update.

Re: Copy of large files to NAS NV+ V2 issues?

Just a quick observation to the above.

Copy speeds from the NV+ to the NV+ V2 are in the 4.3 MB/s range. Network utilisation at about 60%
Copy speeds from the NV+ V2 to the NV+ are substantially faster in the 9.51 MB/s range. Network utilisation this way is 99% (100Mbps)

Re: Copy of large files to NAS NV+ V2 issues?

8-10 MB/s sounds about right for 100 Mbit. Depending on the size of the files transferred etc. you may get slower speeds.

Compatibility issues with your 100 Mbit switch is one possible cause of the problem.

Problems with the ethernet cable is another possible cause.

I assume you have a redundant volume (i.e. not currently doing resync)?

Re: Copy of large files to NAS NV+ V2 issues?

Interestingly enough I have had a spindle (disk 2) fail today. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the copy speed but maybe? New drive should arrive tomorrow and I'll post an update.

Thanks

A faulty disk can cause all sorts of problems and it could be responsible for the issues you've had.

Re: Copy of large files to NAS NV+ V2 issues?

Well here's the update. New spindle in and re-sync done. Have connect both the NV+'s onto the Gigabit section of the LAN, running out of the same switch. Can't say I see any great improvement in speeds. Results are still:

Copy speeds from the NV+ to the NV+ V2 are in the 4.5 MB/s range. (using 3rd Party backup software)
Copy speeds from the NV+ V2 to the NV+ are substantially faster in the 9.6 MB/s range. (using 3rd Party backup software)

Copy speeds using windows drag & drop (selecting multiple files) is staggeringly slower and I gave up after 10 mins as it will take forever to copy.
