.DS_Store files
ReadyNAS Duo V2 RAIDiator 5.3.7
I am trying to "backup" (Mozy pro 2x protect, file copy based) a file share from Windows (2008r2) to a SMB share on the ReadyNAS. The file share on the Windows server is accessed by computers running OS X, and is "littered" with .DS_Store files, these .DS_Store files fail to copy to the SMB share on the ReadyNAS.
I have seen lots of information on how to prevent .DS_Store files from being created, but in this situation ("unmanaged" clients) it is not possible to make changes to the OS X clients. I have found no information (probably my lack of constructing a good Google search) on what might be causing them to not be created (as part of the copy) on the ReadyNAS.
I can create .DS_Store files locally on the file server, but attempts to copy to the SMB share on the ReadyNAS with Windows Explorer fail with a "Could not find this item" Windows error message, I am also unable to create a .DS_Store file on the SMB share on the ReadyNAS, Explorer errors with "You must type a file name"
Cheers

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI'm not a mac guy, but from what I've read there is no need to back up the .DS_Store files. Why do you need to?
You should be able to copy hidden files and folders if windows explorer is set up to make them visible. Though I don't have a v2, this works properly with my OS4 and OS6 NAS.
On moxy, a quick google suggests that while it doesn't backup hidden files by default, you can adjust this behavior through some advanced settings. http://support.mozy.com/articles/en_US/ ... en-files-b - NotTheDoctorAspirantAmongst other things, .DS_store files contain directory layout and color information for OS X clients, while they do not contain "data", user experience is key.
I think I may not have explained the issue clearly enough, Mozy can backup the files just fine online, it fails when copying (the 2x protect part) to the NAS.
This is not a Windows or hidden files issue, the issue is that the SMB implementation on the ReadyNAS is blocking the file write... - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Perhaps I was not clear enough. Hidden file copying between Windows Explorer and my various ReadyNAS works perfectly. That includes a duo v1 running 4.1.13, a pro-6 running 4.2.26, and an RN102 running 6.1.9. As I mentioned, I don't have a 5.x platform. Perhaps a v2 owner can also check this for you.NotTheDoctor wrote: This is not a Windows or hidden files issue, the issue is that the SMB implementation on the ReadyNAS is blocking the file write... - NotTheDoctorAspirantI've did some more tests
I can open notepad and save a file named .txt on either a local disk or the ReadyNAS, I do the same with a file named .txt1 through to .txt1234567890, and .DS_Stor and .DS_Stored, but .DS_Store produces the error.
Then I did some reading of the samba documentation, and had a guess about "veto" in smb.conf
I couldn't get root SSH to work, It looks as if it uses the first password ever used for admin, and doesn't update it, par for the rest of the course, so I ran a backup, unzipped it and opened /etc/smb.conf which lead me to /etc/frontview/samba/ in where I found <veto files = "">, so I put a # at the beginning of the line and saved it, zipped up from /etc, restored and rebooted, and now I can save .DS_Store files
As I said previously "the SMB implementation on the ReadyNAS is blocking the file write" - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I didn't test with the name .DS_Store, because windows 7 wouldn't let me create a folder with that name on the PC (windows also errors with the "must provide a file name" when I tried to enter that on my windows C drive).NotTheDoctor wrote: ...As I said previously "the SMB implementation on the ReadyNAS is blocking the file write"
On OS6, veto files is set to
veto files = /Network Trash Folder/Temporary Items/
On OS4, it is set to
veto files = "/.AppleDouble/.AppleDB/.AppleDesktop/:2eDS_Store/:2eTemporaryItems/TheVolumeSettingsFolder/TheFindByContentFolder/Network Trash
How was it set on your system? - NotTheDoctorAspirant"windows 7 wouldn't let me create a folder with that name on the PC"
.DS_Store is a file, not a folder, although you cannot create a "dot file" in Explorer, you can save a file from notepad. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
As I said, I'm not mac guy...NotTheDoctor wrote: .DS_Store is a file, not a folder
What was the veto= line before you changed it? It does seem to vary on the different platforms. - NotTheDoctorAspirantAnd as I said, its not a "Mac" issue, or a hidden files issue, it's the Samba config on the ReadyNAS.
Imagine if it blocked Windows thumbnail files, not a big issue, until you wanted to copy an existing directory structure onto it...
The veto line in which file ? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Not being a mac guy I didn't know .DS_Store was a file and not a folder. That's all I said.NotTheDoctor wrote: And as I said, its not a "Mac" issue, or a hidden files issue, it's the Samba config on the ReadyNAS.
The line in /etc/smb.conf that you commented out.. Was that simply <veto files = "">NotTheDoctor wrote: The veto line in which file ? - Ki_Adi_MundiNETGEAR Employee RetiredHi NotTheDoctor,
you may want to try latest 5.3.x FW, we removed the .DS_Store from veto files list in 5.3.8 .
