Details of "Volume Scan" and "Check/Fix Quotas"

Hi,

Can someone point me to some detailed info of the "volume scan" and "check/fix quotas" tools.

What exactly are they doing?

Should these be run pro-actively on a scheduled basis? To wit; if I'm not having any issues, should I run these periodically to keep my NAS running well?

Volume scan runs automatically if the nas detects some inconsistencies in the volume. Otherwise you do not need to run it on a schedule basis.
