Email alerts stopped working

Not sure what happened or when, but apparently my email alerts stopped working. They've worked for years prior. The last notification I got was in early January. Looking at my logs I see a bunch of SMART errors have occurred and really would like to get this working again. When trying to configure the alerts I get "Failed to contact SMTP server". Here's what I'm working with:
ReadyNAS Duo v1
RAIDiator 4.1.9

I assumed it had to do with Google's 2-factor authentication, but I tried yahoo as well with no luck as well as the internal SMTP server. When I SSH into the box I am able to ping both gmail's and yahoo's smtp addresses. I've double and triple checked the settings and passwords. Here is some output that might be helpful according to other posts. Please help!

Re: Email alerts stopped working

Is there anything you can see in /var/log/mail.log?

Re: Email alerts stopped working

I guess this means there's nothing in the log?

That log's empty on my system so the info must be stored in another log.

Re: Email alerts stopped working

Exim just deals with internal alert email sending,if you are using Gmail to receive the alert mail, then please note the Readynas will use msmtp email client to send alert email rather than Exim, the logs locate at /var/log/mail.log.

Re: Email alerts stopped working

Good to know. I tried looking at that however and nothing appears (see my latest post). I'm at a bit of a loss here.

Now I remember at one point during this debugging process it said it actually sent a message. I went back and played around and it turns out that it sent when email provider is set to internal and my gmail address was in Alert Contact 1. Apparently it got marked as spam which is odd because it never was before and the sender is myself who is obviously in my own contact list. Weird. At least now it's working though. I set up a filter / rule in Gmail to make sure it hits my inbox. I'm not sure why the previous settings decided to no longer work and even though we didn't figure it out I appreciate everyone's help. At least it's working for now. Thanks!!

Re: Email alerts stopped working

Have you seen my thread with a similar problem?

SSH into the box and check the /var/log/frontview/msmtp.log log file.

I'm not sure if your FW uses the same log as mine though.

Re: Email alerts stopped working

Thanks Flyvert - that's exactly where it was! Looking at the log I got the below message:

Aug 29 00:16:34 host=smtp.gmail.com tls=on auth=on user=MyEmail from=MyEmail recipients=MyEmail smtpstatus=535 smtpmsg='535-5.7.1 Username and Password not accepted. Learn more at\n535 5.7.1 http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?answer=14257 xk2sm10987699vec.13' errormsg='authentication failed (GNU SASL, method PLAIN)' exitcode=EX_NOPERM

Looking at the suggested page (thanks Google!) it basically says to double check your login and password. But it also had a little note about if you have 2-factor authentication turned on to check out this page: http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=185833. Essentially you just need to set up an application specific password. Once I did that and entered that new password into the settings it worked like a charm.

Also of note is the error I got from Yahoo which was:

Sep 08 22:05:18 host=smtp.mail.yahoo.com tls=on auth=on user=MyEmail from=MyEmail recipients=MyEmail errormsg='TLS handshake failed: error:140770FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:unknown protocol' exitcode=EX_IOERR

I'm guessing I would need to turn off TLS for this to work but since Gmail is my preferred method, I didn't look to diagnose that issue.

Thanks

Re: Email alerts stopped working

Looking into the logs further it looks like at one point it also specifically states that an application specific password is required:

Sep 08 18:49:26 host=smtp.gmail.com tls=on auth=on user=MyEmail from=MyEmail recipients=MyEmail smtpstatus=535 smtpmsg='535-5.7.1 Application-specific password required. Learn more at\n535 5.7.1 http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?answer=185833 xd6sm5345471vec.7' errormsg='authentication failed (GNU SASL, method LOGIN)' exitcode=EX_NOPERM
