Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
Hello,
I enabled TimeMachine backup via the admin UI, but I'm not seeing any type of new share under the share listings.
When I start-up Time Machine Preferences, I don't see the ReadyNAS option either.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Eric

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
Which ReadyNas? Which OS: Leopard or Snow Leopard?
If you login to AFP as ReadyNas (TM username) or login to smb://ip.address.of.nas/c/.timemachine you will see the TM share.

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
I'm running snow leopard.
Few more details:
- I'm saying that when I am in the admin section of FrontView, I don't see a separate share for the Time Machine backup.
Strangely, when i started Time Machine, I DID see the READYNAS option, I selected it and tried to connect. It never prompted me for a username or password and instead put this up:
The server “Infrant_NAS.local” may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
-
I also tried connecting as you said: 192.168.1.112/c/.timemachine
and I got this error:
There was an error connecting to the server “192.168.1.112”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator.
--
Shouldn't I be able to see the share on the admin Frontview screen?
Help!

Ok, some people have had issues with SL compatibility. 4.1.7 due out hopefully later this month, maybe later, should hopefully help address some of these issues. Do you still have a Leopard machine? If so, does Time Machine work with that machine?

That's weird.

Did you remember to use the smb:// part of the address? Also this is useful just for seeing that your sparsebundles are there and perhaps deleting them (if you wish). You may find mounting the AFP share is more useful.

No. It's a special share for TM only. Thus you can't set permissions for it etc. You can back it up, by backing up the .timemachine folder on the C volume.

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
I don't have an extra non-snow leopard machine - but I do have an extra PC. Is there any way I can check to see if the share is being created?
It's very strange, now when i started up Time Machine and try and select that disk, the READYNas volume is no longer present.
Is this Snow Leopard related?
Is there any way I can test what FrontView is doing when I check that option to make sure the problem is related to Snow Leopard?
Thanks,
Eric

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
It may not be Snow Leopard related.
There are some commands you can use if you have SSH access enabled which may help identify the cause of the problem.
Have you tried logging out of AFP and logging back in using the TM username "ReadyNas", yet?

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
Forgive me, but can you explain how to do that?
I have not accessed the Time Share via SSH..
I have 3 shares -- all currently NOT password protected. The password protection seemed to get messed up when I moved to Snow Leopard...
I'd like to get that fixed as well..
SO, I think I can get into the share (e.g. Media) fine. How should I try and log into the ReadyNAS share?
Thanks,
Eric

Ah!!!!!!!!!! You're in Share Security Mode. No wonder you are having problems.
You could try switching to using User Security Mode.
Do you have SSH access to your NAS enabled?

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
@egoldy
Try the following:
1. Unmount all other User shares.
2. Mount "ReadyNAS" share using Command-K combo in "afp://192.168.1.X/ReadyNAS" format
3. Enter "ReadyNAS" as User and enter your password.
4. Should be able to open Time Machine and select "ReadyNAS" share.
It appears to be either User share mounts OR ReadyNAS share mount not both simultaneously.
Please post results.

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
@BigBearf / @mdgm..
OK! I think I'm there -- even if I'm not 100% sure what I've done.
a) I switched from share to user mode.
b) I followed the instructions from BigBearf which did show the share
I then tried to start up Time Machine again, selected the share, put my password in, and bang, the backup is off and running. Excellent
Few follow-up questions:
1) Can you tell me what possible changes share-> user mode might create for me? Is there anything else that I should be aware of?
2) I do not know how to enable SSH or whether I should.
3) I've always accessed my media drive through SMB on my mac (smb://192.168.1.112/media). Should I use SMB or should I use AFP? I tried command-K with AFP://192.168.1.112/media and it did not work even though AFP was enabled on the share. I put SMB://192.168.1.112/media and it prompted me for the password again and I was back in. Just not sure what is recommended -- realizing that I'm accessing this share via my Mac, my PC, and a few different Media Streamers (Popcorn A110, Xbox 360, etc.).
4) One other Time Machine question (that you may or may know the answer to: The backup that is running is showing ... of 135.12 GB to backup. However the drive shows 221 GB used. It can't compresss it that much, can it? I had it exclude maybe 30 GB of video files, but it's still a lot that seems to be "missing". I'll check the backup after it's done, but curious if that type of compression is typical.
Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
1) permissions may be changed. You could go to Shares > Share Listing > CIFS (for each share) then go to Advanced Options and Set Permissions for Existing files and folders.
2) If your backup's working fine I wouldn't bother installing SSH.
3) If you have the ReadyNas share mounted, you can't login as another user at the same time.
4) That is weird. I'm not sure why it would be doing that.

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
Hi Eric,
if you still want to check out what's up on your Time Machine 'Share' and afp://192.168.1.112/ReadyNAS is not working, you could try to access it from your Mac like this:
(assuming the IP of the ReadyNas is still 192.168.1.112)
cifs://192.168.1.112/c/.timemachine
, where the username and password should be the ones you've set to access the ReadyNas through FrontView ('admin' and 'passwordofyourchoice').
You should make sure that you're not connected to any other share of that ReadyNas, and that there are no passwords to that ReadyNas stored in your Macs Keychain (since you seem to connect via IP-Address rather than Host-Name the name of such an entry would be 192.168.1.112, listed in the 'log-in' keychain).
Like connecting to afp://192.168.1.112/ReadyNAS, this will only show you the sparsebundles of each Mac that uses that ReadyNas as a Time Machine Backup.
(Using the credentials for Frontview you should also be able to access only the c 'Share', where you would find all available 'real' Shares. If you use the PC for that ( \\192.168.1.112\c ) you will also find those marked invisible for Macs (the ones starting with a '.', like the timemachine one), if you haven't tweaked your Mac to show theese already).
Regarding your follow-up question number 3, i can tell you briefly how i configured our several ReadyNas to suit the need of a few Macs, PCs and Popcorns. (Wouldn't know about the Xbox, but the PS3...).
If you're interested, tell me.
- Johannes.

Re: Enabled Time Machine -- No Share Created
J,
I am curious to hear how you've got it configured.
Switching the type of access to the system (user level) seemed to have fixed many things, but I'm still curious about the various ways to access the data.
All seems to be good - Time Machine, access via mac and PC, streaming from xbox, popcorn, etc.. But curious how other people are doing it.
Thanks,
Eric
