Flaky REadyNAS behaviour
Hi, I have a ReadyNAS Duo, apparently running firmware version 4.1.10.
Environment is Windows 7 home network. Several ethernet hubs and a BT Home Hub router. AVG anti-virus and firewall.
It has been in place for a while, acting as fileshare, backup for laptops, media share and print server.
We recently went on holiday, shutting everything down. On return the REadyNAS has been extremely flaky, dropping out of view on the network (including from RAIDAR) and proving difficult/impossible to get to the front panel. I think I had upgraded the firmware version before that, and all had been working fine.
I have just managed to log on to the frontview, and have been sitting for 30 minutes watching it "loading shares directory".
I am thinking I would like to reset it to the old firmware version, but will that erase the data?
I would like to try connecting it directly to a laptop, but how would I do that?
It's very frustrating because when it was working this unit was absolutely perfect for my needs. Now I am just spending my time troubleshooting....

Re: Flaky REadyNAS behaviour
There is a sketch of the direct connect procedure here: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how ... _pc_or_mac
It leaves out the need to manually configure your PC's IP address/subnet mask. If RAIDar sees the usual 192.168.168.168 address for the NAS (after direct connect), you can set the PC's address manually to 192.168.168.100 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. As stated, you don't need a cross-over cable, as the NAS NIC card auto-senses that, and does the right thing...
Downgrading the firmware shouldn't lose data, though there always is a little risk. I'd take a look at the disk health first.
Also, if you purchased your NAS near your forum join date, your unit should still be under warranty. You could enter an on-line support ticket, and wait for Netgear's help.

Re: Flaky REadyNAS behaviour
Thanks, Stephen. I was able to do the direct-connect, set the IP address to be static within my network which made it visible to Raidar on the network when I switched it back in. Trying to go to "setup" from Raidar gave me a "the server is taking too long to respond" message, after which it disappeared from Raidar again and is showing no signs of coming back. I will try the support route. I thought this forum was all there was!

Flaky NAS Duo v1
Lampshuk,
On looking at your posts, can I ask you to open a support ticket.
I think chassis will need to be changed, if you can't access via Raidar, or if you
can't ping it.
(a) Label disk order, 1,2 left & right.
(b) The Agent will need a copy of original Invoice/ proof of Purchase.
(c) If and when you get a replacement chassis, can you put in a blank disk,
any size, and bring firmware to the same rev, ie V4.1.10 in your case.
Then insert disks in same left to right order.
Regards, Marto

Re: Flaky REadyNAS behaviour
Aggh! Thanks for the response, Marto, but it's an unwelcome message. I was just opening a ticket now. Crumbs. Not sure I can find the invoice. It was September 2011. I will start digging..

Re: Flaky REadyNAS behaviour
Just to close this thread off, in case it is of use to others: It turns out that the ReadyNAS "disappearing" from the network was due to a rogue DHCP server (a Belkin wireless extender that was supposed to have DHCP disabled but apparently did not) popping up every now and then. Removing the extender seems to have made the ReadyNAS much more reliable.
I will say, though, that I have mucked about with other DHCP-server-enabled devices on the network and all other devices seem to recover quite happily. The ReadyNAS seems to be a bit more fragile in that respect.
