From manual backup to rsync

I have been backing up my 2100 manually... should I begin to use rsync, will it do a complete backup or only sync new files?

Yes

I have been doing an rsync, but not scheduled—I guess I should add that.

That doesn't matter.  The logic to make the first backup a full one is built into the backup job itself.

It will begin with a full backup (the backup job knows it is running for the first time)..

You can start with an NFS backup job, and then edit it to use rsync after you run it once.  NFS is faster than rsync for the full backup.
