Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

This is on a ReadyNAS Duo w/Radiator 4.1.7. Every time I plug in my USB backup drive and press the front backup button, Frontview will crash. I can still access the Bittorrent webpage, log in via ssh, backup via Time Machine, etc. By unplugging and plugging the ethernet cable I can successfully restart Frontview, but it really shouldn't be crashing in the first place!

Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions?

19 views and no responses? Spooky. I really hope I'm not the only person experiencing this!

I've experimented a bit more; regardless of which USB port I plug into, Frontview will crash on the button press. I've looked through the logs, but don't see anything obvious. Of course, I don't really know what I'm looking for, so that doesn't mean much. This weird behavior persists through a reboot.

I don't think anyone has complained about this, so you may be the only one. 😄 Reproduce the problem, then send me to logs using the info in my sig and I'll take a look.

Heh. Unbelievable. I deleted the backup job and re-created it, and of course, now I can't reproduce the problem. If I can ever get it to happen again, I'll be sure to send along the logs. Thanks for the response, in any case!

OK, good -- I'm not going crazy. It did it again. I've sent the logs as per the FAQ instructions. Hoping you can figure out what the issue is!

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

Thanks for the logs. It looks like the backup job actually completes, correct? Are you using a custom job for the backup button or just the default?

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

Thanks for the quick follow up!

The backup job does complete, yes. I believe I use a slightly custom job. It goes like:

STEP 1 -- Backup source: "Volume: c" from the pulldown. All other fields blank.
STEP 2 -- "USB Device (Front Port)" from the pulldown. All other fields blank; auto unmount checkbox unchecked.
STEP 3 -- Nothing checked (I only want the backup performed when I hook up the USB drive and push the button).
STEP 4 -- "First time", "errors only" and nothing checked.

It occurs to me now that I probably should auto unmount in STEP 2 to make my life easier, but for the moment I've been doing the "hold the button for 5 seconds" thing to unmount the drive, then shutdown the external backup drive and disconnect.

Occasionally, this seems to work fine, but usually I get the issue I outlined in the first post. Please let me know if you'd like more info or details, or if there is something else I can try to help you diagnose...

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

At what point in the backup process does Frontview stop working? Is it immediately after pressing the backup button, some time during the backup, after unmounting the drive by holding the backup button down, etc.? From your description, it sounds like the webserver may be dying (unplugging the network cable and plugging it back in will restart it), but I don't really see anything in the logs.

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

Hard to say. I haven't had much time to play with this, but the two times I tried backing up and monitoring the process in Frontview every step of the way, it stays alive. I'll keep trying and keep you apprised.

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

Some more info:

* I've noticed that as long as I am monitoring the backup process through the Frontview interface (i.e. I have a browser window open and occasionally interact with Frontview to "keep it alive"), it doesn't crash.

* On a whim, I tried disconnecting the drive through the Frontview interface (Volumes->USB Storage->Disconnect) and got a pop-up that said "HTTP service restarted". Is that normal?

Am I still the only one experiencing this???

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

I have just come across your post and can confirm that since upgrading 2 out of 3 Duo's I have to 4.1.7, I am experiencing similar issues when attaching a USB caddy to the NAS. This never happened with either when running 4.1.6, and the NAS which is still running under 4.1.6 and which also has a USB caddy attached continues to run without issue. I am not using the backup button in my case, just using the USB caddy as a backup location. The issue has arisen since connecting to the USB ports, and I too get the "HTTP service restarted" message when disconnecting through frontview which I never had before. I end up having to manually restart the Duo in order to restore access to Frontview. This now becoming annoying as it seems to be happening more often, and I sometimes access remotely which creates its own problems if Frontview has crashed because it is then impossible to restart the machine! It seems as though the webservice itself is stopping for some reason. I notice that others in the forum has successfully rolled back to 4.1.6 following other issues they have been experiencing with 4.1.7 and am therefore seriously considering doing the same thing on these Duos. Needless to say, I now have no intention on upgrading the remaining NAS still currently on 4.1.6!!

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

Just to let you know that after becoming increasingly frustrated with Frontview keeping stopping on these upgraded ReadyNAS Duo's I, like many others in this forum it would seem, have taken the plunge and rolled back to ver. 4.1.6 on one of the ReadyNAS Duo's and guess what!! So far, it would seem to have resolved the issue and no "HTTP service restarted" message either! I will continue to monitor over the next few days, and if this does seem to be the case, will be rolling back the other NAS to 4.1.6 as well. It will take a lot to convince me to upgrade again and, unless there is very good reason such as upgrading hard drives which are not supported in the current firmware, I think it highly unlikely. As a Newbie, I am not as well versed as many on the technical aspects of these machines, and therefore am heavily dependent on the stability of upgrades when they become to be released. It is a shame because I have been very pleased with this product so far - enough to have bought three of them, and this experience hasn't helped with my future confidence in it. Netgear, please take note.

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

Same issue here... Frontview is no longer accessible, sometime after I plug in a USB hard drive. I'm not using the backup button either.

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

Just to let you know that it is 2 weeks since I rolled back to ver. 4.1.6 and I haven't lost Frontview once since then! Suggest that you may want to try and do the same if your hardware allows you to.

Re: Frontview crashes every time backup button is pressed

I Am having trouble loading Frontview as well during backups. It may be caused by the new firmware, which I just updated. Going to try to rollback to 4.1.6 and let you know my outcome.
