Hard Drive Replacement/Expansion

We have recently breached 95% capacity on our ReadyNas 1000. :hammer: Currently we have four ST3500641AS Hard Drives installed using RAID -5... I have purchased four new ST32000542AS which will upgrade us to 2TB per drive.

Firmware: 4.1.8

Is this system Hot Swappable with RAID-5? What's the best way to go about this? 🙂

Re: Hard Drive Replacement/Expansion

if you do indeed have flexraid raid-5 mode, then you can not expand.

only x-raid is expandable on the sparc devices.

your only option is to backup all data, factory reset with the new disks, restore data

since sparc devices will not support more than 2tb drives, it does not really matter if you keep raid-5 mode or switch to x-raid, when you factory default.

as for hot-swappable, some one else will have to confirm, but I would assume all the readynas devices are hot-swappable.

Re: Hard Drive Replacement/Expansion

Yes, it is hot-swappable. But as mentioned, if you are in Flex-RAID, after resyncing each disk, the additional space will only be available for a new volume (Volume D). You cannot expand Volume C, this is a feature of X-RAID.

So you could make a Volume D, and move some stuff to that volume. You can then re-create some shares on the Volume D instead. Just replace one disk at a time, letting it resync completely, before moving onto the next disk. When all four are done, in FrontView under Volumes, you will see an option to use the additional space.

Re: Hard Drive Replacement/Expansion

Ask your boss to consider the 2100 as an upgrade. It is 4x+ faster. Use that as the primary data store, and use the 1000 as its backup 😉
