I'm using a ReadyNAS Pro 4 as a media server and time machine backup (2 disks, probably 4 soon, with raid0), but I think it is a bit too loud to have on a desk beside the couch. Therefore I want to have it below the desk, on the floor.
A question though: How much space between the fan and the couch/wall does the ReadyNAS require? Will 30-40 cm be enough? Thanks.
The space around it isnt nearly as important as the amount of ventilation it receives within its vicinity so as to avoid overheating
True, but I'd think 30-40 cm space around the fan should ok. The air at the intake would still be at room ambient temperature, and 30-40 cm should be enough to prevent obstructed air flow. Obviously you don't want a lot of dust either.
Monitor the system and disk temps before you move it, and track them for a while in the new location.
