Intermittent lag/pause times on Readynas 424

Hello All, so I have been using my readynas 424 so far to store movie rips, blu ray and dvd, and have noticed a few things. For one, even when renaming the files in my library windows explorer will stop responding every 10-20 seconds ie. pause when I click on a file, hit enter to rename a file, or take any action in explorer. Watching a movie on my computer is pretty much useless because every 30 seconds or so the movie pauses for a 1-2 second burst.

So here is what I found on my own, someone else was experiencing an issue similar to this and blamed it on IPv6 being used by his Readynas/Windows. Well I disabled IPv6 on both the Readynas and windows and the issue still persists. I do not think it is network transfer speeds, as when I send files to the Readynas I get constant speeds of 100-117 whatever units the windows explorer measures in.

Any help is appreciated, I hope it is just some setting I can fiddle with and not the fact that this is how I should expect the unit to perform.

It's not the way it's supposed to perform.

Are you still in the 90-day support window?  If so, you should use that support (via my.netgear.com).

Can you test the performance on a different device (another PC, or perhaps a mobile device)?

Still w/in the 90 day support, and can go that way, and will have another device in the next day or two to test with.

Will post with results

Can you send me your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?

Re: Intermittent lag/pause times on Readynas 424

In network_settings.log eth0 is showing near 100% packet loss and only a 100Mbit/s connection.

Perhaps try changing the network cable and/or the port on the router.

That is odd, I'll check the cable. But if it's the port I'm luckily still Within the return timetable on the router and I'll get that done today.

Re: Intermittent lag/pause times on Readynas 424

Found a faulty cable, swapped it out. While we are on the topic, I cannot seem to find a straight answer as to whether my router, the XR500 Nighthawk is able to do IEEE 802.3ad LACP teaming. and if so, what "layering" I should do. Any answers or advice is greatly appreciated!

The straight answer is that there is nothing in the datasheet or the user manual that says it can do 802.3ad LACP (or static LAGs for that matter).  So it doesn't support either.

Options include

  • getting a smart switch that does support either LACP or static LAG
  • using either TLB or ALB in the NAS (which doesn't require switch/router support).

TLB and ALB can misbehave sometimes though, so I suggest getting the NAS set up before you experiment with them.

Re: Intermittent lag/pause times on Readynas 424

The odd thing is I couldn't find it in the manual or fact sheet either, but it did say it supported Port aggregation. When I went to turn this option on in the router options be specific options in the router were IEEE 802.3ad LACP teaming. Why it wasn't more clear in the manual that these were the options is befuddling to me but everything seems to be working fine between the router and the nas unit.

Where did you see this?
