Lion & Time Machine - NV+

Will there be an update to the NV+ to support Lion, especially around Time Machine. I've picked up the AFP fixed add-on, that's all working on the filesystem, but I have no backup at all now.

If you haven't upgrade to Lion and wants to keep TM working, DON'T UPGRADE!!!!

thanks

Please refer to this thread; http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=51033

Here you'll find that though not yet available, the Sparc readyNAS systems will also be updated to make time machine and AFP work with OS-X Lion. The x86 ReadyNAS update is already available.

I'm having the same problem btw, though have not yet installed Lion (thankfully), just don't want to loose my backup and all..

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

So the NV+ is a SPARC NAS?
How come before Lion I could only connect to NV+ via CIFS, and not AFP. Now I can connect via AFP but not CIFS?

Let me clear that up. Before Lion no AFP, only CIFS and Time Machine via CIFS.
Now I can only connect to NAS via AFP via Finder and not Time Machine and no CIFS at all.

Yes the Duo, NV+, 1100, Infrant ReadyNAS and OEM-rebranded ReadyNAS units are Sparc ReadyNAS.

That is weird.

You can't do Time Machine backups via CIFS. Time Machine backups over a network use AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) for obvious reasons. It seems you may have had a problem with your system if most of what you said is correct.

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

Ok, you are probably right. I just setup Time Machine in the Admin page, and then found it when I used the Time Machine Preferences, so it probably was AFP, and I just didn't know it.
But I was not ever able to hit any shares via the AFP connections in Finder. I was able to in Finder via CIFS though. So there probably was something wrong.

Right now I'm able to hit it in Finder AFP, and will wait for the new update so I can use Time Machine.
Is this update just to fix the Time Machine AFP issues?

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

The update would include an update to Netatalk 2.2 (project that provides AFP and Time Machine to the ReadyNAS). It may include some other updates as well.

To access shares via AFP you have to have AFP enabled for the share under Shares > Share Listing > Sharename > AFP. If AFP wasn't enabled you wouldn't have been able to access the share over AFP.

When you setup Time Machine, AFP is automatically enabled if it wasn't already.

Well I'm pretty sure I had CIFS/AFP/NFS enabled for both my shares. In fact, unless Lion changed it, thats what shows in Frontview now, all 3 of those are enabled.
Anyway, regardless, its working now. Any reason you know of why CIFS isn't working now? Will that be fixed in this update? Thanks for your info and help.

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

Lion wouldn't have changed share settings.

Regarding CIFS, see this other thread: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=55125&p=312523#p312523

I just read that thread, and his method worked! I think the AFP connections are faster, is that just me?

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

AFP is native Mac OS X protocol so you'd expect it to work faster than CIFS on Macs.

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

So what exactly is the deal with the AFP issue and Time Machine, why its not working?
How long till they fix this do you think?

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

Time Machine on Lion requires Server Reply Cache. This is not present in the version of Netatalk included in 4.1.7. The fix should be seen as an urgent issue now so they will work to release a fix as quickly as can be done reasonably.

I wish I have read this before and luckily I didn't do clean install.otherwise I will have nothing at all now. It will be great if there is a trade in upgrade to a intel model readynas!!!

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

Hi All,

Just want to +1 (+100) for correcting TM/Lion issues with NV+!

I upgraded yesterday without researching against RN. So, no backups for now. I have two Macs that rely on the NV+ for TM backup (only one Mac is Lion). Everything else seems to be working very well.

Any ETA on a fix for the NV+? (I read Yoh-dah's post re: support and the coding optimization need).

Also, Thanks for a great device that just works! Reliable and easy to use!

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

There's a RAIDiator 4.1.8-T5 beta out that should fix Lion incompatibility - viewtopic.php?f=17&t=55155

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

Hmm. Installed 4.1.8-T5 and then on login over AFP, got the "Something wrong with the volume's CNID DB... ...switching to read-only mode." message, which I think is a Netatalk error. Result is that one of my shares (my 1TB or so of my photography) is visible but shows no files within it (via Finder). However, if I go in via ssh, everything is present so clearly an AFP issue.

ATM, this is an irritant - content is backed up so not panicking. Give me a couple of days though and I might start.

Question: I discover (after the horse has bolted) that this issue has been known about for at least 8 months - so how come it's taken so long for there to be even a beta fix?

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

NetGear is one of the customers of NetAFP. Take a look at http://www.netafp.com/customers/ and http://www.netafp.com/status-of-netatalk-and-afp-support-by-nas-vendor-322/

NetAFP has been working on the fix for several months (at least) and if the Lion Dev Previews changed how things work adapting to those changes.

NetGear does not support beta OSes so saw no need to release an update till after Lion was officially released to the public (why add a fix for something only to find the fix doesn't work with the production OS?). Of course as the NetAFP team has been updating the Netatalk project over time and NetGear obviously doesn't want to add an old unstable release of Netatalk 2.2 to Sparc firmware, the latest release would present new challenges for backporting compared to the earlier Netatalk 2.2 releases which would explain the additional development time needed to get an update ready for Sparc.

I think I'll wait a bit. I have 3+TB of original photography without a backup (other than RAID protection).

Thanks for working on this fix! 😄 Looking forward to a stable release soon

Installed the Beta and my Macs then took ages to see any folder content. They finally caught up and now all seems fine.

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

I upgraded one of my NAS NV+ to 4.18-T5.

- Finder is very slow to get populated with drive content (vs. 4.17)
- Received the following message in a finder dialog on first connect to a share, "Something wrong with the volume's CNID DB, using temporary CNID DB instead. Check server messages for details. Switching to read-only mode."
- First time I connected I could not write to the NAS drive (cannot create a folder). Dialog stated I do not have the correct permissions. Unmount/remount seems to have corrected this problem.
- Time machine seems to be starting the backup properly now (I'll report back if the backup has any problems).

Re: Lion & Time Machine - NV+

I'm having a lot of trouble with getting Time Machine to backup since I updated to 4.18-T5..

Immediately following the update (after rebooting everything). The TM would sit in Preparing Backup and would not move on. The console log contains a lot of messages as follows: "com.apple.backupd: Waiting for index to be ready (101)" Seems like this might be to do with spotlight so I looked at spotlight privacy info and there was nothing listed. I tried to add the ReadyNAS TM drive but I always receive a generic error "Privacy List Error - The item couldn't be added or removed because of an unknown error."

I decided I would try to delete my old TM sparse bundle but front view does not allow me to see the share to be able to delete it (I can live with the risk of rebuilding my TM).

Any ideas about what to do next? I really need TM to work.
