NV+1 won't boot

Hi, all, hope some of you can give me a place to start. Have an NV+ 1 with 4 500GB HD set up as 2 mirrored sets. Just tonight I tried to reboot the NV+ because I couldn't access frontview even though raidar could see the NV+.

Holding down the power button to turn off the unit seemed to go fine. Saw the LCD with shut down message.

However, after pushing the power button again a little later, the power button would blink quite quickly and then solid green lights show for Disks 1 and 3 but are off for 2 and 4. Fan sounds very loud and system doesn't seem to respond.

No messages on LCD. Can't turn off via power button and have to pull the plug. Tried letting it sit and then rebooting, but got the same thing again. As much as I love my NV+, I just really want to get my data off if possible and get off my butt to upgrade.

Is there a way to make the thing boot without destroying my data? Any chance I could put the old drives in another computer or NV+ chassis or a new chassis of another sort and at least get the info off? Hire an IT guy or data recovery service?

In addition, I live in Silicon Valley and am open to and would really appreciate any suggestions and guidance.

Thanks,
Plato

Sounds like either bad memory or USB Boot Recovery is needed: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/what_does_this_light_pattern_mean

Re: NV+1 won't boot

As mdgm indicated, the first thing to try is reload the RAIDiator image via a USB drive. That shouldn't damage the data on the drives. To be 99.999% safe, you could install a blank drive when doing the update and verify everything is working before you put your data drives back in the unit. If reloading the O/S doesn't work then you can pull the drives, keep them in order (critical), and install them in a 1000/600/X6/NV or NV+. The data will be wiped if installed in a newer unit.

Also located in Silicon Valley. 😎

Re: NV+1 won't boot

Thank you for the kind replies. Believe I successfully wrote the image to the USB using Terminal on my Mac. However, after inserting the usb into the NV+ and turning on and holding down the power button, I do not see the drive lights blink at all. The power button blinks 4-5 times very fast, the 1 and 3 drive lights come up solid almost right away and do not blink at all while the fan runs really loud.

Am I missing a step, or is there something else I should try? I would be happy to pay someone to use their chassis as a loaner just to get my drives' data back. Is it possible there is the NAND error mentioned below? The power button is off, drive light 3 is on solid - the main difference is that drive light 1 is also on solid.

Re: NV+1 won't boot

Memory module might be loose or bad.

You could migrate the array to another v1 (silver chassis) but not a v2

Alternatively you could hook the drives up to a PC: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=306

Have you tried to see if the memory test will run, and/or re-seat the memory module ?

Re: NV+1 won't boot

Thanks for the suggestion. Opened the box, cleaned out the dust bunnies and reseated the memory but still the same. Unable to access any of the boot up options via the power button.

Re: NV+1 won't boot

Had some personal matters to attend to and still need help getting the data off my disks. Ended up getting a USB to SATA adapter and installing OSX-Fuse and fuse-ext2. I have been able to mount dev\disk1s1 but not dev\disk1s2 or dev\disk1s3. However, after mounting, dev\disk1s1 I see a bunch of file folders but no data.

Trying dekkit's linux VM, I'm stuck on the vgchange -ay c line. Says "c" is not found. Now trying r-linux windows version. My lack of technical skills is forcing me to run broad rather than deep. Hoping someone out there can suggest what I suspect is not a very difficult tweak to make one of these methods work.

If it makes a difference, I'm experimenting with disk 2 of 2 of a mirrored raid.

Thanks,
Plato

Re: NV+1 won't boot

Try disk 1. The NV+ v1's raid setup saves the data on disk 2, but there is no partition.

Re: NV+1 won't boot

Just wanted to update the members kind enough to assist. Was able to get replacement from Netgear and got all the data off the original drives. Thank goodness.

Much obliged to everyone.
