NV+ Failing Upgrade to 4.1.10

Okay so I had my NV+ no issues with it and was going to perform the update to the latest firmware.

I went to the upgrade link in front view and it said an upgrade was available. I clicked the link it asked for the system to rebooted. I clicked the button and the NV+ rebooted. I waited 30 minutes and it was still showing Booting on LCD panel. A firmware upgrade has never taken this long before. I waited another 15 minutes then I had to pull the power plug on the back as it seemed to be stuck.

I plugged back in and it rebooted again and then it stuck at boot for another 1 hour. Pulled the plug again as it appeared to be hung.

Went to the boot mode and selected reinstall firmware from the power button/pinhole power on.

It is now stuck at installing firmware.

At no time has the device showed up in Raidar to show it is booting. I also have a ReadyNAS PRO 6 and it shows up and prior to the firmware upgrade the NV+ showed up.

Are there any suggestions as to why this might be hanging? I mean it is a simple firmware upgrade so I am confused as to what the issue might be and it appears that Firmware re-install is hung similar to the original firmware upgrade.

Re: NV+ Failing Upgrade to 4.1.10

Okay so I tried the following:

1) Took out all the disks and booted and the console said Err No Disks
2) Took 4 drives out of another NV+ and put them in the one NV+ I tried to upgrade and it hangs at Please Wait Booting as well. So I am a little confused as to how two sets of working 4 working drives failed because of a firmware update 🙂

Next stop would be to just put in one blank drive and see if I can get it to boot that way.

Re: NV+ Failing Upgrade to 4.1.10

Okay so adding a blank disk got it past the hanging and it is an installing on just the one disk.

Now that I confirmed this appears to be a drive corruption issue with the original 4 drives. How do I fix it?

Do I stick the original 4 disks back in and try to OS-Reinstall again?

Note: The 4 original drives are not bad they were tested and are okay according to Hitachi's testing program.

The new drive was configured successfully with 4.1.10 firmware on it

Re: NV+ Failing Upgrade to 4.1.10

Okay - definitely weird scenario. I did the following:

1) Put in the 1st drive, let the unit boot and fully come up, it booted and showed 4.1.10 firmware and the volume with my data did not obviously show up 😞
2) Shut down properly using the front panel to complete power down
3) Put in the 2nd drive, let the unit boot and fully come up, it booted and showed 4.1.10 firmware and the volume with my data did not obviously show up 😞
4) Shut down properly using the front panel to complete power down
5) Put in the 3rd drive, let the unit boot and fully come up, it booted and showed 4.1.10 firmware and the volume with my data showed up 🙂
6) Shut down properly using the front panel to complete power down
7) Put in the 4th drive, the unit would not boot 😞
😎 Unplugged the power and took out the 4th drive and let it boot up fully
9) Hot-Plugged the 4th drive in and it tested and mounted it and then started to do a resync on the 4th drive which it is running now.

I find this very odd as without taking this approach the unit would never boot up. All the drives were working and even a second set of drives from another ready nas that I tried to put in there failed to boot as well 😞 They booted back up in the other NAS when I put them back into it. So I am assuming that there was some issue with this upgrade which went wrong and this is just a fluke upgrade event. I am waiting until my first NV+ finished resynching and then I will try to upgrade my second NV+ with 4.1.10

Re: NV+ Failing Upgrade to 4.1.10

I'm glad you tried this, I had the exact same problem and I solved it using your last given description. The fourth disc is still syncing, hope it will all work in due time.

I have the exact same problem.

Has anyone heard of an easier solution?

Re: NV+ Failing Upgrade to 4.1.10

I had exactly the same issue, see here: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=67062

After upgrade the NV+ hung at booting but it WOULD boot OK with 3 disks rather than 4. I tested and it booted OK with disk 4 missing and then with disk 4 back and disk 3 missing. Since both of these drives had been showing slowly increasing reallocated sectors I assumed it was some strange disk corruption issue and replaced the disks one at a time and that "solved" the problem... I'm pretty convinced that I could have solved it by simply putting the "failed" disk back in once it had booted and letting it resync OR downgrading it to 4.1.9...

Of course, apart from the slowly increasing reallocated sectors, there appears to be nothing actually wrong with the two drives that caused this problem but since the drives were showing "signs of ageing" Netgear support put it down to the disks. Both disks pass all of the SeaTools tests but I was going to replace them soon anyway due to the growing reallocated sectors count.

I'd be interested to know what disks you had in the NV+, mine were Seagate ST31500341AS drives.

Re: NV+ Failing Upgrade to 4.1.10

After trying the above noted approach, I never got the resync to work. After 24 hours, still syncing. So I went back to 4.1.8, and it's resyncing again.
