NV Security Settings are borked!

OK, I've managed to screw up the security/share settings on my NV running 4.1.14. It was using Share security by default and things were working fine, but then I connected a USB drive and Windows 7 was prompting me for a network username/password to access the USB for some reason. I did some searching in the forums which led me to switch to User security and it's all gone downhill from there. I've now switched between Share/User multiple times - currently back in Share, but now cannot access anything including the default media or backup share folders.

I really don't need much (if any) security on the NAS. It's just me and my wife in the house. I suppose if someone got on our LAN they could access our files but that's probably a low risk.

So please help guide me to the best way to set the security up and get access to everything again. I use SONOS for home audio and it can't access the music now, either.

If User is the preferred way to do security now, that's fine - I just need some hand holding to set it up.

Thanks!

Re: NV Security Settings are borked!

My NAS are all wide open, and I use user mode security.

On the CIFS tab, I have access set to read/write. Guest access is checked.

"Automatically set permissions on new files and folders". and "Do not allow ACL changes to be more restrictive than this" are both checked, with all access in that section set to read/write. I have oplocks enabled.

On the advanced options tab:

Original all shares were set to nobody/nogroup. However if you have a mix of OS4 and OS6 NAS, admin/admin works out a bit better, so that is what I use now. Either should work fine.

All rights underneath are set to read/write, and "Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of files" is checked.

After you make those setting changes, check the "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders..." checkbox and then apply. The check will clear, and the NAS will reset permissions, and owner/group of all files/folders in the share in the background. That should clear up any confused security options because of the changes you've been making.

Also, our PCs are configured to use the NAS admin credentials when connecting to the NAS in windows explorer. You can set that up the Windows Credentials Manager. We have one Vista system where we still need to enter "admin" and the password manually the first time we access the NAS after a reboot - I've never figured that out, but the logon for that system is also "admin" and they probably has something to do with it.

Re: NV Security Settings are borked!

StephenB,

Thanks so much, that's got me about 95% where I need to be.

Now when I browse to \\readynas, I see some new shares: one for "c" and one for "home". Is that just a function of having user security turned on. I can't seem to get into either using admin/admin.

Thanks again.

Re: NV Security Settings are borked!

(1) "c" is the complete volume, and "home" is where private home shares are saved. You are seeing them because you are using admin credentials (only admin can see them). You should be able to browse them both. If permissions or ownership for "home" is messed up, there is a Netgear add-on available to fix that. But if you can't "c" either then it sounds like something else is wrong. Is "admin" the password for the admin account on the NAS? (btw if so, I'd recommend changing that).

(2) You can set up http/s default read/write access for the share, and it should prompt for a user/password. The admin account will work. But you won't get direct http access to the file (at least I don't on my pro). http://NAS_IP_ADDRESS/share/folder/index.html will end up putting you in the NAS's browsing page for http://nasaddress/share. You can then navigate to folder, and click on index.html - which will launch in your browser.

To do better, you could set up the NAS to redirect http://NAS_IP_ADDRESS to http://nas_ip_address/share, and set that share up as simple mini-website. Then you will need to be careful to use https://NAS_IP_ADDRESS/admin when managing the NAS. You can still use https://NAS_IP_ADDRESS/shares to use the built-in NAS share browsing pages. You set up the redirection in services->standard file protocols. If you try that, make sure the share is configured for read-only http access (otherwise it won't work). You'll see there is an option to disable login authentication for the redirection, so that setting is under your control.

Re: NV Security Settings are borked!

Thanks again. Looks like you replied to my 2nd question before I deleted it from my original post 🙂 I figured this one out shortly after I replied.

As for the first question - I am using the default admin/netgear1 login info for Frontview (assuming that's what you are asking about). Cannot access C or Home with admin/admin or admin/netgear1 . Not a big deal really as I don't plan to use those shares, but just curious.

Edit: I do have admin/admin set in the advanced settings as you recommended above, and that's what I have added to the Windows Credentials.

Re: NV Security Settings are borked!

admin/admin in the advanced settings are the user/group - NOT user/password.

You should have entered admin and netgear1 into the windows credentials.

BTW, I do suggest you change that password. "admin", "password", and the default password for the device are all poor password choices.

OK, I will change it. It was working fine with admin/admin though. As long as I can access my files I'm happy! 🙂

Yes, I know using the default login is poor security, just never felt risky enough to change it.

Edit: Still can't get into C or Home with the credentials set to use admin/netgear1. Maybe I need to try the add-on you mentioned.

I believe you need to change the admin password away from the default before you can access those.
