NVX stopped performing after years of good performance
Hello and as always thanks to everyone who supports these boards.
My NVX machine's performance dropped significantly about 10 months ago. This mainly shows up on write, but I am also seeing an derogation of performance with read as well. When writing to the disk, it will have spurts of writing and then it needs to pause, then starts writing again. I am running Raid5 on 4x2TB. I have never had an issue with performance over the 5+ years I have owned the box. Nothing in my network over the last 10 months has changed.
After reading many posts and looking for a solution, I decided to resort back to factory settings. All data was backed up to USB drives (2.0) connect directly to the ReadyNAS machine using rsync and restored the same way. After 7 days, it has only restored 2.2T. Using some calculations off the internet, this should have only taken around 30 hours.
It doesn't seem like the factory settings fixed my problem. In examining the disks, I notices (SMART+) that there were some raw read errors. I do not know if this is connected or not, but thought I would share everything. Since the factory reset didn't fix the issue, I am thinking it is hardware related. However, I am wondering if it has to do with the disks themselves or NVX box?
Any help would be appreciated. Many of the testing machine performance links on this board do not work, so I don't know how to show you quantified results.
thank you!!!

Re: NVX stopped performing after years of good performance
One of your disks has a single reallocated sector. The disk may still be O.K.
You might want to power down, remove the disks (label order), connect them to a PC and test the drives using Hitachi's tool.
Perhaps also run the memory test (at least two passes) and the disk test boot options.
Did you also grab the logs before the factory reset?
What filesystem is on the USB disks?

I sent you the log files before the factory reset.
Both drives are NTFS:
/dev/sdf1: UUID="2CA4FE17A4FDE2EE" LABEL="FreeAgent Drive" TYPE="ntfs"
/dev/sde1: UUID="F474B7AA74B76DCC" LABEL="My Book" TYPE="ntfs"

Re: NVX stopped performing after years of good performance
Thanks.
Your performance issues before the factory reset were likely related to your OS partition being nearly full. I see this in diagnostics.log and disk_usage.log
The clean setup on new firmware by doing a factory reset should be a help. Moreover there are some filesystem improvements since 4.2.9 (on which you previously did a factory reset or initial setup in 2010) that can only be obtained by doing a factory default on newer firmware.
Performance using NTFS wouldn't be as fast as with e.g. EXT3 however NTFS can be natively read by your PC so it does have some advantages.

Re: NVX stopped performing after years of good performance
Fantastic. Sounds like all good news. I am running the memory test now. Quick question: can one bad drive cause the performance issues?

Re: NVX stopped performing after years of good performance
One bad drive can cause performance issues.
You may not have a bad drive, you may simply have had performance issues before the factory reset due to your 4 GB OS partition being nearly full.
However it is still a good idea to check.

Re: NVX stopped performing after years of good performance
Yes, this is why I performed the factory reset. The issue is that I am still seeing the same type of performance issues after the reset. I guess I am trying to figure out if the NVX machine or the Drive(s) are the culprit. At first I thought it was the network, but since I am seeing similar poor results with the USB drives, it must be something internal.
Thanks again for all the help and looking through my logs.

My guess would be perhaps a bad disk.

Have you tried booting without the USB drives attached?

Re: NVX stopped performing after years of good performance
I just ran the memory test and disk test at boot without the USB drives attached. Neither test found an issue, but the performance problem still exists.
