Networking Question

Hi everyone, I own a RN716X unit and constantly move massive files between the NAS and my PC which is hampered by the gigabit router between them. My question is as follows: If I leave the NAS plugged into the router via its gigabit ports, and directly connected one of the 10Gbe ports to a 10Gbe adapter in the pc (which would also be connected to the router via a gigabit port) would that al low me to direct transfer from the pc to the NAS at 10Gbe speeds without negatively impacting the network availability of the NAS through the router. I'm sure its a simple answer but I'm not particularly network savvy. thanks.

edit: this is basically what i'm proposiing:

Re: Networking Question

I haven't tried this on OS6, but it should be possible. You'll need to try connecting to the NAS via I.P. to make sure you are connecting via the faster speeds.

Give it a try.

Another option would be to put a switch with at least a few 10G RJ-45 ports between the router and your PC and NAS.

Re: Networking Question

Did a test run by hooking the Ethernet port in my pc to the NAS and connecting to the router via wifi and it seemed to work. Wanted to be pretty sure before shelling out for the 10GbE NIC. But it seems to work

Re: Networking Question

You can connect 2 devices together without any problem. You just have to pay attention to this :
1°) you will need to manually define IP address because they won't pick the DHCP server(unless one of the devices has one installed)
2°) you must use proper cable (I think nowadays you can use either straight or cross without thinking, but before you ought to pick the good one. Of course you must choose a cable that can handle the speed you want and tolerate the speed you want to achieve and is shielded enough for your environnement to avoid errors)

Linux can have multiple interfaces enabled simultaneously so no problem (configured some servers this way including my NAS), same for windows (tested on servers too). I can't see any reason why this wouldn't work and since the speed is defined by the least capable thing in the chain as long as you get full 10Ge stuff everywhere you should be fine. I don't know how network discovery will work though, I advise to use IP only.

Re: Networking Question

The NICs are auto-sensing. There is no need to use crossover cables, but you can still use those if you really want to.

Thank you everyone. I'll be getting this set up soon and will report back.

Re: Networking Question

For the record, since i forgot to post back sooner, this did in fact work quite well, more than tripled my transfer speed which is now just capped at the write speed for the RAID array, having slight issues on the computer end with the web browsers and other internet programs occasionally using the wrong networ adapter out of the blue and thus claiming i have no connection, but this is not a major issue as a refresh usually fixes it.

Re: Networking Question

What about using IP V6 for the link to the readyNAS? I doubt you have any other IP V6 traffic... Also, what subnet masking are you using for your connection(s)?

Re: Networking Question

Usually using routes is more than enough.
admitting the NAS is on 10.0.0.1/24 and PC 10.0.0.2/24 ; and that the normal network is 192.168.0.0/24
it should use 10.0.0.0/24 card for traffic to this network and the 192.168.0.0/24 as default gateway, shouldn't be a problem. You can force it manually if you want to by setting the route to 10.0.0.0/24. The default route should be already set via DHCP.
