New 314 > No permission to access user home folders
Hi,
So I did swap the underpowered 104 for the 314 and set it all up again. This is far less daunted, load-wise, by anything I throw at it.
My shares work just fine, but quite early on I noticed I couldn't access any user home shares. Windows 7 (Ultra and Pro) says "Network Error Windows cannot access \\Share\user.name You do not have permission to access \\Share\user.name. Contact your network administrator to request access."
That last sentence always is a kick in the nuts of said network administrator...
SSH-ing in to the NAS I can see the home folders just fine in /datavol1 (as I reused the disks from the 104, it recognised that a volume called /data was already there so I had to pick a different name, which shouldn't matter).
They all look correct there, like that.
So I tried mv such a folder and recreate it, chown to the designated user and then chmod 700 to get the permission right again. But that doesn't work either.
Rebooting the NAS doesn't help.
I've not yet tried to delete the user from the admin GUI and recreating it, perhaps I should.
I thought perhaps it was because the disks hadn't synced yet so I waited a few hours but now they have, still no luck.
Seems like I'm not the first with this issue, but no solution there: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=55920
So all normal shares work fine and the NAS performs admirably. But why no access to the home shares? Of course I have the credentials right...

- AgeStorAspirantI just noticed there is also a /data folder with nothing in it so I figured put a symbolic link in there to the /datavol1/home folder but that made not difference.
Note that when in Windows Explorer I browse to the NAS by Host name or IP address, each user can see the Shares they are supposed to see, and access them. Each user can also see their private home folder there, but clicking in to it gives that network error. So it's there alright, just inaccessible.
One more observation, the home folder is owned by root, is that correct?
ls -l /datavol1

I have just tried this, to no avail. Delete user, create it with the same username, still no go.
The irony may be that I have to create true shares, lock them down for single user access, and then that way recreate what should have been no-effort private home shares.
Why does this shit never work easy, in one go?! The joys of being the SysAdmin...
Sigh... - AgeStorAspirantDigging continues...
From my Mac, I can also access over Samba all Shares just fine but my home folder says "The operation can't be completed because the original item for "user.name" can't be found"
Whatever the hell that may mean...
Any ideas anyone? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI agree there is something not quite right about private shares in 6.0.4. I can't access the admin private share even with admin credentials. I can see the shares for other users, but I can only see the data if I use their credentials.
We went through this before with the v2. The admin needs access to all the files - ideally through the OS6 admin web pages and also AFP, CIFS. With the new platform that includes the ability to delete snapshots associated with those folders. Somehow Netgear loses track of that fairly obvious requirement. - XtraSpclCrspyAspirantI am also having these exact same issues. Unable to access hidden admin \c\ locations. Unable to restrict user access on any shares, unable to map drives. I ended up simply just doing a factory default. I can now access my private shares via a mapped drive, sill unable to login to admin to view hidden system folders though. Permissions are still bugged for users. IM running a Readynas 312.
- AgeStorAspirantWhilst the fact I'm not alone is somewhat comforting in as far as it seems I'm not doing something stupid, it is frustrating that no solution seems out there.
The 104 I toiled with last week didn't have this issue at all, same 6.0.4 software, just a different CPU.
Factory resetting it again, 3rd time lucky, is not something I look forward to. I worked through the night twice already this week to make sure the data was available to staff in the day.
I have logged a ticket with Netgear, hopefully they won't actually deny support for having enabled SSH.
I personally don't care much about me as admin having access to other users' private home folder. If I need to, I'll jump/remote desktop in to their PCs. What I do care about is that they can all, including myself, see and make use of our own private home folder, which we can't.
If this is a firmware thing, I may just have to keep the Duo purely for home folder purposes, or indeed create quasi-home folders through shares. But let's wait till I hear back from Netgear. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
With the RN102, users can access their home shares (all except admin, which is odd). It sounds like this might be more messed up on the 3xx.AgeStor wrote: ...I personally don't care much about me as admin having access to other users' private home folder. To your comment above... Deleting their snapshots, or rolling back to files they accidentally deleted is probably something you still need to do, as this is not available to users at all (AFAIK). And if snapshots get out of control, they consume all the file space.
Basically, a private share should always be what you call a "quasi-home" share. The admin should see it, be able to manage it, reset permissions, etc. Of course you can do this with ssh, but it shouldn't be necessary. - LeiaNETGEAR Employee RetiredHi AgeStor,
In your case, you destory the data volume and re-create a new one. There's a bug for permission set incorrectly for home dirctory created in newly added volume. And it's already fixed, and will be included in 6.0.5.
For admin accessing to all users' home, OS 6 doesn't support this for now. But as I know RDs already have a plan to improve home settings thing. I just want to know what behaviors would you prefer? Do you guys can give any advice?

Lol. They've obviously been using hand-me-downs from Microsoft's library (have you tried Office 2013 - not suitable for business use IMO!)
Posted on the ReadyNAS facebook page, and will make a nice lil bump for this thread:
It's a complete joke that the "admin" user cannot view the private home share folders of its users on Netgear ReadyNAS 312 running OS 6.0.6.
What is it? A complete joke.
I've just wasted 3 evenings of my life scouring the so called Netgear "support" pages and various forums only to finally stumble across this:
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=70704&p=392651
So... Now I have to risk losing data by transferring it to manually-created "private home shares" - oh, another evening's work - thanks.
Can I disable the auto private home shares? No.
Pretty UI, but weak functionality. Most displeased.
Correct me if I'm wrong, or just ignore me like you do with the majority of other posters on this page.
Where's the "dislike" button? :)
