OS 6.2.0 on RN Ultra 2 Plus - Experience

ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus
Updated from OS 4.2.27 to OS 6.2.0
Using 2 HD:s, Seagate ST31000528AS 1TB 7200rpm

OS6 setup:
3 users, 10 shares, no apps installed, antivirus disabled, SMB access only

I do not have that much experience in the NAS-field and only use my RN in a
network at home with a NG router and a couple of Windows computers.
No Unix/Linux or Mac software involved.

The new OS6 is a very welcome update for NG RN products.
I would like to thank NG staff, testers and forum members for a good work making
the new OS6 also working on older RN products.
Maybe the only downside is that it's officially not supported on older RN
products so I don't know what to expect from a new FW release in the future,
should it work or not on my Ultra2+?

After using OS4 I like the new OS6 very much. I have been on OS6 only a few
days and got the most of what I needed up and running.

There are a few things with OS6 and related software that I think are not
working properly. Hopefully some of my findings can help developers and all
you users.

1. Strange behaviour with fan speed and temperature.

Environment temperature about 20C.

From cold startup the SYS-temp increases from about 20C to 30C (stops here),
CPU-temp increases from about 20C to 60C (stops here) in 20 minutes, fan speed
are constantly 970rpm. HD-temps about 33C. After a reboot fan speed starting
with about 970rpm but quickly (in a few minutes) drops to about 780rpm and
stops here. CPU-temp goes from 58C to 72C (stops here) in about 15 minutes.
Fan speed still at 780rpm. HD-temps about 36C.
This behaviour was investigated with the NAS unloaded and could be repeated.

With the NAS with higher load in a 1.5 hour backup the CPU-temp increases from
70C to about 80C with constant fan speed 780rpm, HD-temp about 38C.
Now fan speed goes from 780rpm up to about 1200rpm and CPU-temp drops back to 70C
and HD-temps drops a bit.
I have not yet tested what happens with higher load when on steady-state
CPU-temp 60C after cold start.

Why are the fan speed dropping from 970rpm to 780rpm after the reboot and
allowing the CPU-temp rise to 70C?
If the temperature readings are correct with 60C/70C/80C, should I be worried
about these rather high numbers, failure or reduced life time of my RN?
I see that the CPU-temp popup state a normal temp up to 85C.
Do this also apply to my Ultra2+? Separate limits for different hardware?

Some numbers below the Temperature chart in System/Performance are a bit
wrong I think. Min value should not be 0C, maybe better to use the minimum of
measured temperatures since start.

2. Backup to external USB-drive failed.

My USB3-drive connects as it should on front port (USB3) and shows up in
system/overview and among shares under media. Creating a new backup plan with
a USB port as destination does not work, also indicated by that the browser
button is not highlighted. Upon running the backup plan you get a destination
error. Same if selecting other USB ports in the menu.
I don't know if this should be working or not as OS6 is not officially
supported for this hardware. Backup plan to USB using share media/USB as
destination works fine.

3. Downloading apps and enabling ReadyCloud failed at first.

Solved by adding my routers local IP-address as DNS in network settings.
Maybe a coincidence, but tried this twice with and without DNS.

4. ReadyCloud on my cell phone (Android) not working for photo backup.

I have a problem with ReadyCloud on my Android cell phone when trying to
backup photos.

Installation and connection works fine and I can on my phone see folders
on my RN but when enabling the photo backup functionality no files are copied
to the selected RN-folder. Maybe this is related to that the ReadyCloud app
for Android doesn't know the correct source of the photos. This probably
differs between brands.

Why not also have pre-made backups for other objects like documents,
music files, ...?

Re: OS 6.2.0 on RN Ultra 2 Plus - Experience

I can confirm #3. I will try #2 next week. Waiting for Mr. Mailman to bring me a USB drive.

Re: OS 6.2.0 on RN Ultra 2 Plus - Experience

I can confirm #1. I just upgraded and my system is running similarly hot and pretty much the same as detailed. Anyone found a solution for this yet?
I didn't have issue #3. It just worked.
I haven't tried the other two.

Re: OS 6.2.0 on RN Ultra 2 Plus - Experience

Actually the temperature might not be an issue. I did some searching and the Ultra 2 Plus has an Intel Atom D525 which has a Tmax spec of 100C.
I also loaded a backup drive back in that had 4.2.27 and Frontview shows normal CPU temp as 0-80C.

I had #2 with generic USB drives. When I bought decent ones, that issue went away.

Re: OS 6.2.0 on RN Ultra 2 Plus - Experience

It's working great for me for 2 years. Since maybe 6.1.1. no pb with the fan speed. Don't bother with the temps readings because it's not perfectly accurate and more than that (like it has been said) the atom are low power cpu thus can reach 90°C without any problem. And it make no difference in life expectancy of the product, if the temp reported is 50 or 60°C (imho).
Same for the fan speed if those are 700rpm or 1000rpm, as long as they are not at full speed constantly (the 30 sec full speed at boot is normal).
Since the BTrfs update and the spin down disks functionality has been added, there is really no major pb to install it on Ultra2 x86 legacy NAS.
have fun
