One last chance - I want to setup a factory reset RN104 to a functioning state
I was an early adopter of the RN104, To say I was dissapointed with it is an understatement.
11 months ago I spent 2 weeks trying to get something or a functioning NAS out of it with a back and forth with mdgm. Since I bought it I have had numerous disk fails,(seagate). constant locking, bad FW updates losing function etc.
So I bought a WD My cloud, backed up all data onto that and turned off the RN104 and so it has stayed for 11 months. And guess what? the my cloud has actually worked. It does what it says on the tin. Imagine that.
So here I am giving this unit rn104 1 last try. during the weekend I reset back to factory default. I have 2 wd red 3tb in the unti and the only thing I have done is change the admin password. I have another 3tb red waiting to go in. This unit promised the world and delivered nothing so I am not bothering with apps and accounts I just want a NAS that does the following
Hold data
Does NOT lock up
So what way do I need to configure it to do that?
All and any info is appreciated

Re: One last chance - I want to setup a factory reset RN104 to a functioning state
The logs you sent in last time show you were running 6.2.2 and your thread indicates that you tried out some 6.2.3 beta builds. There was a stability fix in ReadyNAS OS 6.2.5
So you may wish to update to 6.2.5, then once it has come back up fine on that use this workaround to update to 6.6.1
If you haven't loaded any data on the unit yet I would then do a factory reset (wipes all data, settings, everything) to get a clean setup on 6.6.1.

Re: One last chance - I want to setup a factory reset RN104 to a functioning state
Hello again mdgm,
After I did the factory reset sunday the nas automatically found new updates and updated twice. I can't remember the version of the first one and with the second I am now on 6.6.1.
Are you saying I should do another factory reset now? Will it wipe to 6.6.1 or go through the updates again?

You don't need to do another factory reset, but I think if you're going to do a factory reset you may as well do it after updating to the latest firmware to get a clean setup on that. It's not essential though.

Re: One last chance - I want to setup a factory reset RN104 to a functioning state
Dear chrizfitz:
First, let me say that I am not affiliated with ReadyNAS or Netgear.
My first ReadyNAS was a RN202 which, I think, is similar to the RN104. Like you, I initially had some issues getting it up and running but most of them turned out to be user error. Truth be told, I have posted more than my share of questions/issues on this forum and mdgm ans others (JennC and BrianL) have provided amazing support and have even gone into the back end of my system (remotely) to fix more complicated issues.
I have learned a lot over the past few months and am now running two ReadyNAS units acting as a primary server and a backup server with remote user access, Plex media server, etc.
I have tried the WD MyCloud device. I think they are fine units but (depending on which model you have) I feel the ReadyNAS units (even the entry level 104) is much more robust.
I would encourage you to give the RN104 another try. The OS 6.6.1 firmware seems very stable and these units can do alot. If you're interested, you can read a comprehensive review of the RN 202 here.
Regards,
David
