Options in backup to external USB on RN102 F/W 6.6.0

Good day folks, hope this is not a duplicate but I didn't find an answer yet.

This is the senario, My client attaches a USB drive once a week and runs manually a incremental backup to the EXT USB drive.

All is well except the drive of course is growing in size.

I saw that in the options of the backup that I could select a 4 week full back up routine, Now I'm not sure if that means every time the user initiates a BU that it willl first run a full then three incrementals and then a full, three incrementals full etc. Also Not sure of the option to delete the backup first.

what I would like to do is this, and if that requires more than one backup job that's fine.

Allow the user to run a full back up once a month and remove any exsisting back up prior. This might require the "remove Backup first option?

Then with a full BU in place allow them to conduct an incremental three times, then repeat the full on the fourth run.

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Options in backup to external USB on RN102 F/W 6.6.0

It grows in size because files that were deleted or renamed on the NAS aren't deleted in the backup.  Changed files are just replaced.

If the client manually deleted contents of the destination folder every now and then, the next backup would copy everything (even though it is incremental).

The "remove backup first" option runs every time, so that is not what you want.

If you want to immediately delete any files on the USB drive that are no longer on the NAS, you can switch the USB backup to rsync (using 127.0.0.1 for the source IP address).  That will give you an advanced setting that deletes those files.

Well from that, it appears my best option is RSYNC. As the client has no business accessing the External USB, they simply connect it and start the backup.

Would love to automate but the drive is required to be placed in a fire safe for the week and used only to do the back up.

Next Job is Friday so I'll post back after I have a chance to reconfigure and test the RSYNC method.

Thanks, MIke R
