Power Failure During Rebuild
RN104, 4x4TB WDC Reds. X-RAID, RAID 6. No cold spare... yet.
I've been putting this thing together on a shoestring, upgrading the drives from 2TB Greens as the nickels and dimes roll slowly in. The last major piece is almost in place; the UPS. FYI, my new 600W Smart-UPS should be arriving in about ten days. I know, I know... it should've been the first thing on my list, before those other drives, but oh well...
And now we're having an unusually hot and dry summer here in the Alaskan Interior. Fires are popping up out of nowhere, everywhere, and as a result power is spotty.
It's nice to be able to say that our local electric company is sporting the biggest battery in the world, but that's of little consolation when the slightest of split-second drops sends your array into a 60-hour tailspin.
So what's to become of my backup if the power drops again during the rebuild? Will I need to start everything all over again? I guess I'll find out, won't I?
Thanks,
Jeff Bowman

Re: Power Failure During Rebuild
If you simply replaced a disk, then the rebuild should continue (or at worst restart from scratch) when the NAS reboots. Not ideal of course.

Hi Stephen, how are you these days. I always enjoy coming to see you at your second home 😉
All disks are in place for a couple of weeks now... I was wondering whether I'll need to recreate the array anew and recopy all of my backup data, should the power blip again during the current rebuild.
What's your take on it?
Thanks,

Re: Power Failure During Rebuild
assuming you don't encounter a multi-disk failure during the rebuild, the nas should recover and continue rebuilding automatically.
that said, no drive, raid array or even device should ever be the sole repository of any important data.
backups, mean multiple copies of your data, preferably on different devices and ideally in different locations (ie fire/flood/theft).

Got it, thanks. I just wasn't sure.

I agree. I was doing exactly that when I first configured my file storage plan, but the repeated warnings on these forums have since convinced me otherwise.
So keep it up. You're doing some good 🙂

If I get a temporary UPS in the meantime, can I safely shut down the ReadyNAS in the middle of the rebuild to install it?

Re: Power Failure During Rebuild
I think I'm just a long-term house guest at mdgm's second home. 😄

This should be safe, but if the power is reasonably stable I'd probably risk letting it complete.
