Random Access is Denied Messages

Hello,

We've been using a ReadyNas Pro 6 since August 2012 and for the past couple of weeks the office has been receiving random Access is Denied Messages when trying to save or transfer files to random folders on our ReadyNas unit.

The client machines are all Windows 7 with the latest patches. We have a Windows SBS 2008 server (basically 2008R2) using AD. I've joined the RN to the AD environment. The users map a drive on their computers to access the ReadyNas Share. Everything has been working fine for the past several years with no saving or permissions issues. This issue literraly just started 2-3 weeks ago. When the issue first popped up, I updated to the latest firmware (I was one release behind.).

Also it does not affect all users at the same time. Some users will have access and some others won't and then all of a sudden everyone will have acccess again. Any suggestions on how I can fix this. This is really wasting a lot of time for the office and I will probably have to look for another solution if I can't get this resolved.

I'm also using 3TB WD RED hard drives using the X2 RAID option. Please let me know if there's any other information I need to provide.

were the files transferred before the NAS was connected to the AD?

Yes, I followed that guide when I set up the ReadyNas initially.

Some files were created on the old fileserver before the readynas unit was joined to AD, but for the past 2 and a half years there hasn't been any issues accessing those files. Also, this will happen on files recently created with the RN .Again this is an INTERMITTENT issue. The same file will not be accessible at one point but a few hours later it will be accessible. Also, they sometimes can't even copy files to the RN that they saved on to their local computer.

Looks like you've hit the max number of open files. Do you have a lot of users on your network using the NAS?

So is there anything that can be done about this? 17 users doesn't seem like a large user base for a device like this.

So that's it? No reply? It's been a several weeks. Can anything be done about this or should we just put this in as a bad purchase and not recommend it to others who have more than 15 users?

When you access your NAS using UNC, does it error out with access is denied or only when you access a share?
Did someone set 'disabled' to everyone under advanced settings on the share?

Everyone is enabled and it actually has full access.
Again we've had this for about 2.5 years and this just started happening a couple of months ago. They have always used a map drive to access the data.

I sent an email to the user who just emailed me that he got an access is denied message again to try accessing it using UNC. I'm waiting for his response.

The user just notified me that he gets the error when using UNC as well.

Could the NIC on the ReadyNas be failing and that's why the users are getting these errors?

When they started getting these errors I decided to replace the switch because a fan on the switch was failing so I thought they might be getting these issues because of a failing switch.

The reason I bring this up is that one of the users just notified me that a shortcut to an application that's on the ReadyNas keeps on getting deleted. There's a Windows process that cleans up desktop icons and removes shortcuts that point to network shared locations that it can't access.

I'm only using one of the network ports on the ReadyNas, if it is a NIC issue would it help to change ports, or if one port is bad they're both probably bad?

You can check the NIC stats via frontview, that should tell you if you are seeing layer-2 issues. You could also use something like pingplotter to monitor connectivity (there is a 30 day free trial).

I've seen lots of posts here where both NICs failed together. I don't think I've ever seen one where one of the two failed, but the other worked. If the NIC is bad, then you could replace the NAS under warranty.

The office is still getting this error and it's even a little weirder now. This is not happening to all subdirectory, just mostly the main working directory...great! But I've done some testing:

- I created a new share on the NAS
- I created a direcotry that is on the main share that's having issues.
- I mapped a drive to that share on one of the client's computers and they were able to save to that directory (they can't save to the same directory on the actual live share)
- I then copied over another directory where the user was getting errors when trying to save. I was able to save to that directory on the new copied share.
- I opened up the Security permissions on the live share and the test share. I duplicated the permissions on the live share from the test share that the user could save to - user still couldn't save to the live share after changing permissions.

So, now the easy answer would be - just copy the data to the new share - but the issue is that there's almost 5 TB of data on this share and 2.25 TB on this main working directory - It's a law firm, and this is the directory where they save all their Active Client Case folders.

Any ideas why this is happening?
