How is it possible that Netgear has released firmware that isn't relyable. Have they hired the Volkswagen management?

Re: ReadyNAS 104 system hanging frequently after 6.4.0 upgrade
@RobTWo They have one firmware for a whole range of devices with vastly differing actual capabilities. They hide from customers the fact that it is imopssible for the lower end devices to support the advertised feature set until it is already bought. They care about their revenue, but not their customers. The same firmware is fine for higher models which are able to support the advertised features. I'm not saying they're great at engineering firmware (thank God most of the engineering is done by Linux hobbyist folks - for free I might add), but in this case it is the combination of hardware and firmware which is an issue.
This is the reason why almost all workarounds involve turning off AV, journalling, turning off snapshots or deleting with a (warranty voiding) script, and various other shenannigans.
I've avoided Netgear for many years because it was always impossible to trust the product specifications. Because of their aggressive pricing and the fact I was buying several things at once I thought I would give them another go. This was a terrible mistake.
The only way they can rectify this is to inject some honesty into their marketing and product claims, and take the hit on providing fit-for-purpose products to existing customers. Too many people blam engineering and support; ultimately this is the fault of business leaders including product development managers, marketing, strategy, and governance.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 system hanging frequently after 6.4.0 upgrade
And here I thought I had a corrupt file I was trying to copy over to my ReadyNAS that was causing it to hang, apparently not.
I have a ReadyNAS 104 with 4x4TB drives (ST4000DM000), running 6.4.0. Recently, I was trying to copy over a folder full of photos from my MacBook Pro running 10.10 to the ReadyNAS using command line rsysnc command to do the copy on the MacBook Pro. I've done this 100s/1000s of times, but this time, the copy would run for a while, and then fail saying that it lost connection. Then I would see that the ReadyNAS was hung, with the only option being to pull the plug, plug it back in, and wait for the "Volume data is syncing" to take place - which takes about 72 hours to complete.
I do not have snapshots running, and I have no apps installed. For services, I have SMB/APF/UPnP/HTTP/HTTPS running, along with ReadyDLNA. Disk Spindown is not enabled.
I hope this gets fixed soon, right now the ReadyNAS is more or less unusable.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 system hanging frequently after 6.4.0 upgrade
I can try it in 48 hours when the resync process is complete - but I'd rather not try beta builds that may fix my problem while possibly introducing new unknown issues, I'd rather try something that will fix my problem and has actually gone through QA. Thinking "it can't be worse than 6.4.0" isn't really realistic.

Actually I think 6.4.0 has never been in beta, so it can't get worse than that.

6.4.0 had a public beta period of about 6 weeks.
I understand that you (and many others) have had trouble with 6.4.0 (I had some myself). But please don't spread misinformation here.

So I may not spread sarcastical comments, but Netgear can just spread anything?

You've already spread plenty of sarcastic comments, and no one has deleted your posts.
Saying that there was no 6.4.0 beta is a mis-statement of the facts, which is different from being sarcastic.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 system hanging frequently after 6.4.0 upgrade
"Can you try ReadyNASOS 6.4.1-T35 (Beta 3)?"
Installed after the resync completed. Started copy again, froze the machine again. Had to pull the plug. It is resynching again, will be done in about 72 hours (again).
if it could just get to where it wouldn't hang the machine to the point it needed the plug pulled and rebooted, that would be an improvement.
I'll wait until a tested solution from here on out.
Thanks

Re: ReadyNAS 104 system hanging frequently after 6.4.0 upgrade
Hello everybody,
I have the same issues after upgrading to 6.4.0 and "YES" it is a shame!!
Unfortunately, this thing has to run by the end of the week, no matter what. Here my solution: I order another ReadyNAS 2120 at Ama...on by Prime, will recieve it tomorrow and put the 4 hdds into the new chassie. Did anyone ever tried that? Can this work?
Regards,
Peter

If the new 2120 is running something older than 6.4.0, it will attempt to downgrade. My guess is that will fail, though I am not certain. Make sure you have a backup before trying this.
If this is business-critical, then I'd downgrade using ifixdevice's method, and restore data from backup. If the current NAS can't be taken out of service, then I'd get new HDDs with the second NAS and build it from scratch. It might take a bit longer, but it is certain.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 system hanging frequently after 6.4.0 upgrade
Hi StephenB,
thank you for quick answer. It´s a pity. I have 16 VMware Guests running on that NAS for a training, of course with no backup. Is there any indication of a releasedate for 6.4.1?
Regards,
Peter

Since I don't work for Netgear, I don't get advance info. So I don't know.
They did announce a new NAS model yesterday (RN 3138), and the press release said it (a) was available and (b) running 6.4.1. But that might be a targetted release, and not qualified for all platforms.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 system hanging frequently after 6.4.0 upgrade
Hello!
Some experience:
I installed the Beta T35
I killed everything which is not "default": Bonding, any additonal app, every timebased service like disc scrubbing etc.
I deleted every snapshot
With that actions I managed to run the NAS for about 6h without problems in comparison to maybe 20-30 min before doing all that. There ist still massive CPU load from kworker processes, but I´m not sure if this is the reason for stalling the device.
Regards,
Peter

Re: ReadyNAS 104 system hanging frequently after 6.4.0 upgrade
I'll just pipe in with my last few weeks of work:
Basically, you have to Factory Default your NAS.
I have a ReadyNAS 102 and a 104 at home, both afflicted with the 6.4.0 problem. Long story short, I managed to get the 102 stable after a Factory Default (all other tricks did not work for me), and dropped a 3TB drive in it from my 104, which went degraded. I was hoping it wouldn't affect the limited stability of the NAS, but didn't seem to have much of an impact. I then configured RSync jobs to copy the data, and ran them one at a time. After quite a few tries, and restarts (ie: a few weeks time), I managed to get all data onto the 102. I then Factory Defaulted the 104 and poof, the stability was back. I created a bunch of Rsync jobs, and had them run. A few days later (without any hangs/resets, etc) the data was back onto my 104. I dropped the 3TB back into my 104, and my original drives in to my 102, and everything synched right up.
Since then, both NASes are stable and run well. Actually, I'll say they run better than they ever have. I know it's a pain in the ass, but it was the only way to get my NASes back online. The time it took though, was not short.. I feel for the people who have TBs of data which will need to be copied out elsewhere to do this. It will be frustrating, and more than likely, very long. But, in the end, everything will be up and running.
I hope 6.4.1 will cure the problems, but for people not wanting to hold out and maybe not have the new update work, the Factory Default is a definitive way out.

6.4.1 RC1 didn´t cure any of my problems. Still stalls after a unpredictable time.

Hi!
Yes, I have updated to 6.4.1 , and wait for the resync to complete. I will post answers afterwards.

Hi!
When I came home from work, my RN104 was frozen. Display shows: resync: 71.95%.
