Ready NAS NVX Power failure

I have a 2010 bought ReadyNAS NVX which will no longer power up (not a flicker or glimmer of any life).  I have tried:

- changing cables

- changing power socket

- leaving cold for 24 hours and restarting

- tweaking the battery to reset it

After the above, as far as I can see the general experience is to replace the power supply.  However since a new power supply on Amazon or eBay is about  70 British pounds I would like to check out any other options or validating this is the issue.  Also I found instructions on the site for changing power supply on other models but not the NVX.

I do have at the moment a spare ATX 600W power supply - if I could connect this up it would let me at least prove its the power supply.  Wondering if this is supported or if it is likely to make things worse! < http://www.readynas.com/download/archive/pdf/ReadyNAS_PSU_pinout.pdf>

Alternatively, I do occasionally see second hand units - more money than a power supply but a full unit in case its actually the motherboard dead on mine.  I'm assuming any NVX case would do (eg that I could put my disks into a Pioneer edition case) but are they also cross compatible with the NV/NV+ range?

Finally, most of the data was backed up fortunately however my husband had just loaded on a bunch of files in the afternoon before the next backup ran.  Have readers had much success reading xraid-2 disks with native Linux systems or Linux Reader?

TIA

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

Just to close this off, in my case it definately needed a new power supply. I replaced it myself with one from ebay, advertised for the ReadyNas. With shipping it was around $100, but didn't require any repinning or changing. I disassembled the NVX and re-assembled with the replacement power supply and the NAS picked up where it left off.

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

Hi, hopefully you'll see this. I have exactly the same problem, my NVX RNDX400e won't power on, it's also a 2010.

I'd be interested in compatible power supply options.

Compatible units that will take the same drives and retain the data

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

Hi,
An NVX is x86 architecture while NV and NV+ are SPARC. So you cannot put the HDDs of the NVX into an NV+. But, the power supply is the same. So it is possible to put the PSU of an NV+ into an NVX chassis.
Alternatively, you can buy an RN314. As the architecture is also x86, you can boot the unit with your drives in it and it will work (as long as your drives are ok of course).

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

RNDU4000 (Ultra 4), RNDP4000 (Pro 4) will also work, but they're the same generation as the RNDX400E (NVX). RN314 is the new one.

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

Thanks so much for the prompt reply.

Do you mean the drives will work in them as they are also Intel based ? And/or the power supplies would work in the NVX?

Having had this failure, I'm interested in getting a backup NAS. So conceptually getting a different unit I can put the drives in, and then buying a newer model or power supply to revive the old model would be interesting.

I have a simple, single user set-up, the NAS is used mostly for music and a Logitech Squeezebox music server.

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

Is the RND4000 compatibe? It doesn't have a letter ...

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

RND4000 (NV+) and RNDX400E (NVX) use the same power supply -> you can use the power supply of one into the other, but they're not same architecture.
RNDU4000 (Ultra 4), RNDP4000 (Pro 4), RN314 and RNDX400E (NVX) are all x86 -> you can use the HDDs of one into the other.
RND4000v2 (NV+v2) is not the same architecture as neither RND4000 (NV+) nor RNDX400E (NVX). And I don't know about its PSU.

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

WOOT!!!!!

I took the whole unit apart this afternoon, literally. Cleaned everything and replaced the CMOS battery and put it back together and it works!

Thanks for helping on the model numbers and advice. I'll definately get a backup NAS now...

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

So much for that. It definately came on, went through the boot phase, did the "Checking FS..." and stopped with no network connection. It hit power off, and then again and it did it again to do an orderally shutdown which worked. Took it back to the place it normally lives, replugged the ethernet and power cable and nothing.

Re: Ready NAS NVX Power failure

That does sound very much like a power supply problem.  When one of the voltages is out of spec, but not completely gone, random successes in booting can happen.  Once the unit is up and running, the power demand goes down, and it might stay on for a while.

The power supply is a modified Flex ATX (aka mini ITX) supply -- modified in that it has no fan and a slightly modified pin-out.  See here for details: https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Hardware-Compatibility/Inexpensive-power-supply-replacemen....

You can buy an ATX power extender and cross-wire a couple of pins as a temporary way of connecting any old ATX supply externally to see if that really will fix it.
