ReadyNAS 104 Times out when trying to access directories with too many files.

I'm experiencing a problem where the contents of directories that exceed a certain number of files (I'm not sure of the exact limit) fail to display. I've tired to view the files via Finder on OSX, through the web browser interface, and even on the iOS app. The directories contain a large number of image files (mostly jpeg and png). The directories with a smaller number of files seem to open and display properly, even when they have similar content (image files, in this case).

I'm running a setup using X-RAID with 3 TB drives in each of the four bays.

This issue is severely limiting the usefulness of my NAS, so I'd appreciate a quick response regarding how to resolve this issue.

Thanks in advance.

The backend setting change resolved the problem.

TheNoel told me:

"The difference is night and day. The largest directory containing 12,000 files loads promptly and is easy to browse via SMB.

I haven't tested the other protocols yet, but I'm satisfied having at least one that is reliable."

Hi TheNoel,

Can you check if your volume is resyncing? Also, tell us which Firmware is running in your system.

Kind regards,

Which protocols are you using to try access your files from your Mac?

How many files are in the directories that fail to display?

Re: ReadyNAS 104 Times out when trying to access directories with too many files.

BrianL,

I'm currently running 6.4.2. My volumes already reordered themselves in the readynas X-RAID (RAID 5) configuration, and after checking my logs, the last resyncing operation completed itself on April 10th.

mdgm,

I've had mixed results with different protocols.
SMB times out frequently, whereas AFP won't time out, but takes an enormous amount of time to display files. I'm not exactly sure what the maximum number of files was that could be displayed. One directory had several hundred pictures and it displayed normally, but one of my directories has over 10,000 photos, and it timed out.

Anyway, thanks for your replies. If you can suggest an alternative protocol to use or some other kind of work around, that would be helpful.

Re: ReadyNAS 104 Times out when trying to access directories with too many files.

Hi TheNoel,

Do you have Anti-Virus plus installed in your ReadyNAS? If yes, disable it and see if it makes a difference. If same behavior occurs, send us a copy of the system device logs (complete).

Kind regards,

Re: ReadyNAS 104 Times out when trying to access directories with too many files.

There is a backend setting change that can help with listing the files using SMB using a Mac.

I have sent you a PM to let you know what I would need to implement this change.
