I am running a ReadyNAS 314 with firmware 6.4.2 (upgraded today). I have been having some problems lately and I believe it may be due to the ownership of my home directory. My home directory is owned by "ken" (one of my two users who have shares [me]). I did some searching on these forums and found others whose home directories were owned by root, admin, and guest so I've not figured out just WHO should own the home directory (and what group it should belong to). I am hoping someone (perhaps at NetGear) who has access to a 100% fresh ReadyNAS (preferably with 6.4.2, but I won't be choosy) that hasn't been tinkered with could post an "ls -al" of the root directory for me. I'll certainly take other people's input too (if you haven't been goofing around in your root directory via ssh). I'd like to see an "ls -al" in the home directory as well.
Mine root directory looks like this:
root@readynas:/# ls -al total 72 drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 242 Feb 14 08:20 . drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 242 Feb 14 08:20 .. drwxrwxrwx 1 admin admin 90 Feb 14 08:20 apps drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1632 Feb 14 08:19 bin drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 May 21 2012 boot drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1380 Jan 19 15:02 data drwxr-xr-x 15 root root 3380 Feb 14 08:20 dev drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2502 Feb 14 15:29 etc drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 54 Feb 14 08:19 frontview drwxr-xr-x 1 ken users 152 Dec 28 21:02 home lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 Dec 27 2014 homes -> /home drwx------ 1 root root 0 Jan 3 2015 job_005 drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 636 Feb 14 08:19 lib drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 40 Feb 14 08:19 lib64 drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 80 Feb 14 08:20 media drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 May 21 2012 mnt drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 98 Nov 25 16:59 opt dr-xr-xr-x 208 root root 0 Feb 14 08:19 proc -rw------- 1 root root 1024 Sep 11 2014 .rnd drwx------ 1 root root 118 Feb 14 08:19 root drwxrwxr-x 23 root admin 820 Feb 14 15:14 run drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2750 Feb 14 08:19 sbin drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Feb 28 2012 selinux drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Jun 4 2012 srv dr-xr-xr-x 12 root root 0 Feb 14 15:30 sys drwxrwxrwt 1 root root 150 Feb 14 15:29 tmp -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Feb 14 08:18 .update_success drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 70 Nov 25 16:59 usr drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 158 Feb 14 08:19 var

I did a factory reset recently, and I haven't touched the permissions with ssh. The only user is admin. The system has two volumes (data and data2)

Re: ReadyNAS 314 home directory owner and group
The "ken" home directory itself should be owned by ken:users, but /home should be owned by admin:admin

Re: ReadyNAS 314 home directory owner and group
Thank you. It appears that permissions and ownership for the home/admin folder are incorrect as well. I'm going to reset them to what StephenB shows in his.
