ReadyNAS DUO drops off network

I work in a small office and we use two ReadyNAS Duos to share a lot of files on our network.

Every week we have a meeting where about half of the office (7 people) have to switch off wired ethernet to wireless on their laptops. This causes both drives to drop off the network and become inaccessable. The only way I've found to get them back on is to reboot. But if they are rebooted and everyone is still on the wireless they soon drop off again.

We use a Cisco RV042 router, and have the drives assigned to a static IP on the router-end and on the ReadyNAS interface.

Does anyone have any ideas why this would be happening?

thanks.

Have you tried another wireless router to see if the problem occurs again?if possible,PM me with your full system logs

Re: ReadyNAS DUO drops off network

I would say your first and foremost problem is you are using Cisco equipment. Cicso is notorious for making overpriced, low quality products. I will never buy a Cisco product if I have a choice about it. Their support is lousy and overpriced as well. But they know most people will pay it because they paid so much for the equipment, they will hesitate to throw it away.

Secondly, check your Cisco router. Some WiFi routers have a setting to seperate the WiFi Connections from the WIred connections. I believe this feature is designed to prevent an open WiFi network access point from accessing wired network points. Not all routers have this feature, but I believe Cisco/Linksys routers do.

Now when you say the Duos drop off the network is it only for the wireless users or for all users on the network(including wired terminals)?

Re: ReadyNAS DUO drops off network

Well I would have to agree with the cisco statement. However they have been performing better than our D-Link equipment. Those accesspoints are almost worthless.

Anyways, The router itself is not a WiFi enabled router. It is a Small-Business Dual-WAN router. It is the first piece of our network on the chain, and then goes out to two separate accesspoints. But the Drives fall of the network for both wireless and wired users. Raidar cannot find either of them once it happens too. It is literally as if they do not exist, and getting into frontview is impossible because the IP address is no longer registered to the devices.

Re: ReadyNAS DUO drops off network

Well I seemed to have solved this problem...

Initially I had both of my readyNAS DUO boxes plugged directly into my router, and then a 16-port switch coming off the of the router and then to the computers/printers of the network.

By switching the NAS boxes to the switch, and a few users to the router directly, the problem seems to have been solved. I can't really explain why, maybe someone else will be able to.

I have had similar problems when connecting ReadyNas Duos to a Cisco router (and, at home, to a BT Home Hub 2). Basically, I no longer trust any router to work dependably as a switch, however many downstream ports it may have, and always take just one line from the router to a switch and connect everything to that. Far more reliable, and nobody's local connections are upset if I have to reboot the router.

In your position, I would be inclined to buy another switch.
