ReadyNAS NV file system check stuck at 92%

My ReadyNAS NV started making a bit of a "sandy" noise -- not loud, but just different from its usual quiet self.

I checked the health logs of all four disks -- there were no soft read errors -- but I noticed that I had gotten an overtemp warning on one of the drives on the previous day (the weather had been especially hot.)

So for safety's sake, I decided to do a software initiated reboot with file system check. (I did NOT do a hardware reset.) The check proceeded slowly but steadily for about 24 hours (it's checking 1.7 TB), but then RAIDar reported that it was at 92% finished with the file system check. And there it has sat for the last 12 hours.

FWIW, the "sandy" noise has gone away. I see no other errors reported.

[1] Can I just reboot?
[2] Should I be worried?
[3] Anything specific I should look out for?

TIA.

  • Hello,

You should be fine to reboot the device, it may go through and try to check the file system again. If it gets stuck again use the link below to skip the file system check. It sounds like you are most likely dealing with a bad drive. You will want to check the health of the drives first thing. If you can not get into the system after skipping the FS check, contact support.

  • So:

When I rebooted, RAIDar reported "file system check 100%" and stayed there for an hour. So I powered on, skipping file system check (as per directions in the link). Thereafter, the system appeared to be up and happy. TimeMachine backups proceeded as normal.

I'm still somewhat concerned about the health of the disks. The temperature on disk 2 DID get up to 55C (131F), but that's still comfortably below the Samsung operating range of 60C.

The SMART information for all four disks show zero for [Raw Read Error Rate, Reallocated Sector Count, Seek Error Rate, Calibration Retry Count, Soft Read Error Rate], and all the Extended Attributes.

I don't get too twisted up about the Hardware ECC Recovered Count, but they do have a large range: [9996312, 15046047, 5920291, 40446], respectively. (Note that Drive 2, the one that habitually gets the hottest, has the highest count.)

Is there something else I can do that will help me decide if its time to swap in new disks?
