ReadyNAS Ultra 6 (6.10.10) doesn't boot - Stuck on "ReadyNAS" prompt screen

I think my unit has finally died, I'm just trying to confirm, or see if there's a way to work out which component is faulty.

Power on, shows "ReadyNAS" on the front panel, goes no further. I can't hear it powering up any disks. If I pull all the disks and power on, I don't get any "no disk" error. If I hold in "reset" and power on, I don't get any boot menu. If I hold down "backup" and power on, it doesn't attempt to boot from USB. Anything I've missed trying?

Unit was upgraded to OS6 about 4.5 years ago, 4GB RAM installed, I don't think that's the issue. Original power supply wore out about 6 months ago and I replaced it, seems unlikely the new one has failed (old one stopped generating enough power to kick over and start the unit, unit seems to power on fine, just not booting).

I'm guessing I'm looking at failure of CPU, mainboard or similar - anything else I can do to diagnose? Probably not worth spending $$$ on at this stage (better spent on something new), the unit is quite old - lasted probably longer than expected.

This is usually a failed PSU.  You can replace it fairly inexpensively.  I'm tagging @Sandshark as he often provides useful advice on this..

I'm not saying it's impossible that the PSU has gone bad, but I installed a brand new Silverstone SX700-G power supply into the unit in April - that power supply would still be under warranty.

I think my only way to test this would be to buy another PSU - happy to give it a shot, it just seemed unlikely to get a fail on a basically already new PSU.

Only seeing ReadyNAS on the LCD screen suggests that the PSU might only be delivering 5 volts.

There are actually a lot of things that can cause this, the PSU is just the most common.  "ReadyNAS" is the default display, programmed into the display itself, so it only takes 5V for it to show up.  The NAS doesn't even need to get through POST, so RAM, CPU, and a lot of other components could be the culprit.

Rather than purchase yet another supply, do you have a standard ATX12V supply (even one you can temporarily remove from a computer)?  You can hook it up externally and see if the NAS boots.

Thanks - there is likely a PC here with a compatible supply, we'll pull some things apart and see what tests we can run.

Powered the unit up on a Corsair CV550 ATX power supply, no change.

I dug out the original 1GB RAM for the unit and swapped that back in, no change with that either.

I don't think there's much else can be tried, seems like it is indeed dead. Thanks for the suggestions, it was worth a shot.

Re: ReadyNAS Ultra 6 (6.10.10) doesn't boot - Stuck on "ReadyNAS" prompt screen

I have the same unit and am having the same problem.  I've had this problem before after I bought my Ultra 6 used almost two years ago. The unit is fully populated with (6) 8TB drives. I couldn't get it to boot soon after I bought it so, after doing the research, replaced the PSU, and it resolved the issue.  The Ultra had been online, up and available for weeks then today, all of a sudden wasn't, accessible over the network.  I checked it and it seemed to be hung. I pressed the power button and it immediately shutoff.  I never had the opportunity to use the power button to try and shut down gracefully.  Anyway, when I press the power switch on, the fans come on.  The drives appear to be spinning but I can't get past the ReadyNAS on the console.  Once I realized the drives are spinning, that had me thinking that there may have been file corruption that causes the system to hang on boot. I figured I'd use the reset button in the back of the unit to try and access the boot menu to perhaps do a factory reset. This unit is a backup platform for my production NAS so I wasn't concerned about losing the data. If I was able to access the boot menu that would suggest the PSU is okay and the culprit may be file corruption.  Well, I can't access the boot menu no matter how long I hold the rest button in while pressing the power button.  I'm thinking that would suggest PSU but would like to hear from the folks here on their thoughts.

Thanks in advance for your time and attention

Re: ReadyNAS Ultra 6 (6.10.10) doesn't boot - Stuck on "ReadyNAS" prompt screen

When the power supply was dead, mine wouldn't power up at all. The on button would attempt to spin the fan, but failed to start.

When the board was dead, it was exactly like what you are describing.

But others in this thread identified that a failed power supply can also present as a similar issue, and a failed PSU is more common. If you have a power supply you can borrow out of a PC, it's a fairly simple test to see if that fixes things - I'd at least give that a try, as it's an easy fix if that's the issue.

Re: ReadyNAS Ultra 6 (6.10.10) doesn't boot - Stuck on "ReadyNAS" prompt screen

Thanks, I picked up a used PSU off eBay for 20 bucks as I don't have a spare lurking around.  Either its going to work or it isn't. If it doesn't work I'll harvest the drives and buy another backup NAS box. When the PSU failed on me the first time the box acted exactly like it's acting now so fingers crossed here 🙂
