ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

Hostname: NAS
Model: ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer Edition [X-RAID2]
Serial: 001f33ea2aeb
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.2.27
Memory: 2048 MB [4-5-5-15 DDR2]
IPv4 address: 1: 192.168.1.9
IPv4 address: 2: Not Connected
Volume C: Online, X-RAID2, 6 disks, 18% of 7394 GB used

Problem events in a nutshell:
-System crashed replaced all drives, year later system was resyncing
-Reinstalled OS to attempt fix, after a while, system started resyncing drives again
-Factory reset, one drive finally listed as dead.
-Removed dead drive and tested disk in windows and with WD test software, It worked FINE!!!!!!!!
-Did factory reset, system did a re-sync which took a long time, during which it rebooted a lot, but it seemed ok after that finished (but i didnt test for long).
-Added new sixth drive, system re-stripped, and now it is re-syncing
-The health of all drives appear fine

The problem is it is taking forever to re-sync and the system is rebooting frequently. Is rebooting over and over normal for re-syncing (see log below)? Given the fact that it does not state Rebooting device each time, is my system crashing?

Cut and paste of front view log showing the constant rebooting:

Re: ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

Logs are sent. Reboot/resync issue still remains.
-resync finished,
-i installed the logitech media server add-on,
-ran a backup job which moves files from a USB drive to the ready nas

Problem: The system has restarted twice for no apparent reason. Also, what size should my NAS be with 6x2TB disks? It only shows Volume C: Online, X-RAID2, 6 disks, 19% of 7394 GB used.

UPDATE: My system just started re-syncing again.
Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, 6 disks
Status: Resync 9% complete, Time to finish 350 hr 47 min, Speed 1396 KB/sec
.
I do have NTI shadow software running on various computers if that helps any.

If you are running single redundancy, the volume size should be 9 TiB. If you are running dual redundancy, then your number is about right.

I can't tell from the log snippets whether your RAID array is dual redundancy or not. The volume status page in frontview should tell you.

Are you seeing SMART errors?

Re: ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

Thanks for the reply, it is X-RAID2 mode (as shown in what you referenced which was from Frontview home page), I believe that is what you mean by dual redundancy. Or I do recall selecting the raid choice that allows 2 drives to fail. The drives look fine (see below).

BTW: my re-sync rate has increased considerably then what was shown above, I guess the backup job ended or crashed.
Configuration: RAID Level X-RAID2, 6 disks
Status: Resync 4% complete, Time to finish 5 hr 20 min, Speed 95.1 MB/sec

However it has rebooted 2 more times since what was posted above:

No. The original XRAID didn't allow mixed sizes of drives. XRAID2 added that.

Single/Dual redundancy is something different. You would have selected adding a drive for redundancy. The volume page should tell you if you have dual redundancy (e.g., RAID-6 XRAID2). Dual redundancy provides protection against 2 drive failures, so the volume size ends up 4x2TB in your case.

Agreed, there is nothing odd in the SMART stats.

Re: ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

It shouldn't be rebooting.

Some things you could do would include:

1. Running the memory test boot option for at least a few passes
2. Power down, remove disks (label order), connect them to your PC and test them using WD LifeGuard Diagnostics.

There is of course the Disk Test boot option that you could use, which whilst more convenient to use isn't as good as WD LifeGuard Diagnostics.

Your serial does indicate that your Pro is an older unit.

Re: ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

I will run the memory check, and even re-seat the modules. WD Data Lifeguard tools will do a quick self-test to gather and verify the data lifeguard information contained on the drive, but I am sure it will show all is fine similar to what i posted above.the extended test will do a full media scan to detect bad sectors, but i would expect this to be seen from the behavior reported from the readynas. Does being an older serial number suggest a revision to the hardware with known concerns/issues? Or are you implying one should be aware of the impending death/malfunction of aging electronic components? Is a motherboard replacement an option, what's does a replacement motherboard cost? The power supply has already been replaced.

Re: ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

It is an older unit, that's all.

Hardware can fail at any time, but a good first step would be to rule out e.g. bad memory (you have double the stock memory installed) and ruling out a bad disk.

The NAS shouldn't randomly reboot like this.

Another possibility could be e.g. a failing power supply.

Re: ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

I wonder if the replacement power supply is compatible. When did you replace the PSU?

The NAS doesn't run a long disk test in normal mode and may not alway pick up problems with disks. A long test is done with the Disk Test boot menu option.

I would recommend running the Lifeguard extended test.

Re: ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

I replaced the power supply August 2013. I originally bought a SeaSonic SS-300SFD 300W SFX12V v3.1 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - OEM from new egg, but returned it and upgraded to a Silverstone Tek 450W SFX Form Factor Power Supply (ST45SF) for more available power. The SeaSonic part number matched what was in it originally if i recall correctly, the only problem was the stock cable lengths were to short and I had to add an extension cable to reach the motherboard.

Yes, so far no issues, but each one will take 13+ hours. I dont think the hard drives (mechanically) are the issue.

Understood, but it is still useful to know they passed the diagnostic.

BTW, I've had some drives pass the extended non-destructive test with flying colors, but fail when I ran the destructive write test. Though if that is provoking the resyncs, I'd expect to see something in the SMART stats.

Another option (after the diags are run) might be to schedule a disk scrub in the pro.

Re: ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

That appears to be a typo. I think i did align the cut and pasted text which probably caused it. Below is an untouched cut and paste. BTW, all is working fine right now. I am running the extended test on the drive that was labeled as dead mentioned in the first post (which was replaced by disk 3 shown below). I would expect this drive to be the one to show issues since it was deemed dead by the readynas.

Re: ReadyNas Pro Pioneer Resyncing issue

Testing the drive the readynas labeled as dead, which was replaced by drive 3 in the list above, yielded only 3 bad sectors all of which were recovered. Data life guard reported the drive as passed. In addition, this drive is currently running fine as an external USB drive.
