Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

I have not reported to netgear support. I'm a new user and have been getting used the device. I experienced the performance lag and decided to do a little research, which led me to this thread.

I will report to netgear support while I investigate this further.

Thanks

Probably best you start your own new thread rather than hijack this one.  However my thread here may help you as I had exactly the same problem.  https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/Readynas-102-connection-problem-with-Apple-Macs... Your issue is a Finder problem.  Its a bug introduced to the Apple OS which Apple have so far refused to acknowledge or fix.  There is a fix that can be implemented to the firmware called vfs_fruit which fixes the problem somewhat.

Please accept my apoligies.  I got my threads mixed up.  Your input here is relevant.  Sorry.

Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

barryd,

No need to appologize.  I really didn't want to hijack your thread, which seems really important for you to address for your client, but I figured my problem was the same thing you/your client was experiencing.

Hopefully I will be able to get this resolved shortly.

Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

I figured I would check back in here and give an update.

I opened a case with Netgear support.  It got elevated to L2 Support.  Supports resolution was to get a faster hard drive and create smaller directories so the Mac OSX Finder doesn't have to work so hard to display the results.

Now I will say that this tech kept saying that this is a workaround.  I did bring up the contents of this thread in my case, so I can't say I'm really buying this workaround.

The tech closed this case, so I will now have to go another route to solve this with a better workaround.

This is not really a solution at all.  "Create smaller directories"?  What does that mean?  Store less stuff on your drive?  Well yes I think that will work but its not very practical.

Have they applied the vfs_fruit fix that mdgm did for me yet?  Thats what you need.  To be fair to netgear though its Apple that need to fix this.

No.  It just means using more subfolders.  For instance instead of having 10,000 jpgs in a flat folder, organize it as 10 subfolders with 1,000 jpgs each.

Speed of directory browsing is not a strength of CIFS/SMB - if you look at smallnetbuilder reviews (for any NAS) you will see that is usually the slowest benchmark.

I agree that would be a good thing to try.  I suspect the L2 tech might not have been aware of it.

Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

First thing I'll say is that the tech was very thorough.  He went through everything to make sure it was set up correctly as well as could be performing at its best.  I'm sure he wasn't aware of the vfs_fruit work around.  It's also too bad that there is a known defect (I use this term loosely) with the way Apple implemented CIFS/SMB and that we seek a work around from a third party.

Yes, StephenB is correct.  The direction was to organize subfolders with a lower amount of files.  Figuring out that limit could take time.  My guess using my Mac is that it will be less then 1000 files per subfolder, I'd have to retest that to be certain.

Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

My clients files were all separated into sub folders with folders within those.  About 250gb worth of files.  Made no difference.  Still took an age to get into the folders list.

One thing we have discovered on one mac since the vfs_fruit fix is that sometimes a folder which we know is there as it appears on the other mac simply doesnt show up on the other one.  The only option when this happens is to restart the mac which takes a while.

Hi medoc,

Could you further describe your problem with your ReadyNAS system or perhaps start a new thread?

Kind regards,

Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

Hi,

actually we are using a Readynas 104, but I think it shouldn't matter really.

The symptoms are similar.

When trying to access shared folders and files in these shares 3 things happen:

- everything is OK - everyone is happy

- folder is accessible but slow - opening files can take very long or even fails

- cannot access folder. On macs the error message is "The operation can't be completed because the original item for "WORK" can't be found."

Thanks,

medoc

Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

Hi medoc,

Can you confirm if "WORK" is a share or the Workgroup name of your ReadyNAS system? Also, is the system up to date?

Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

Hi medoc,

Was the problem evident in both SMB and AFP protocols? Also, have you considered updating to 6.5.0 or 6.5.1?

Kind regards,

Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

We primarly use SMB because of the mixed environment (there are PC-s as well) but have tried AFP when the problem arose. And I can confirm that it affects both SMB and AFP.

We plan to update to the newest firmware, but as I mentioned this problem survived previous updates already.

Re: Readynas 102 connection problem with Apple Macs

Hi medoc,

Since you are still using an older firmware (6.4.2), can you confirm if the AV service is still enabled? If yes, kindly disable it and see if the SMB performance improves. I also suggest that you check this FAQ page.

Hi,

Antivirus is globally disabled already, so it is probably something else.

Best regards,
