Readynas 104 drops out when copying to it
I have a readynas 104 configured with four 4tb drives in raid 5. I've managed to copy about 6tb onto the device without issue but now whenever I go to copy something onto the box, lets say a single 4gb file, it starts out ok and will copy around 1gb of the file at 31MB/second but then the connection drops out completely and I get an error message saying:
There is a problem accessing Z:\....
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again.
Now I've obviously mapped drive Z: to the box and when I say it drops out, I can still ping it's IP address. I have tried both NIC's with different cables and in different ports on the router with exactly the same result every time. I am running two other buffalo NAS boxes off the same router and they are working fine.
I can view the files etc over readycloud and check it's performance without problem and in reasonable time, but then as soon as I copy a file over in explorer, readycloud all but freezes and wont let you navigate through the various screens. And once I try to copy a file across I can still view files and directories on the box in explorer, albeit it takes about 30 seconds or so to load each directory which is ridiculous, but before attempting to copy each directory will load almost instantly as you would expect.
Any ideas?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDid you try support? (In the first 90 days after purchase, you have free phone support. After that use support.netgear.com).
Also, you might try turning off antivirus. - perkijAspirantHi and thanks for the tip, I've lodged a ticket with Netgear and they got me to reset the ReadyNas... just waiting for it to rebuild now... 6TB and two days of copying gone :( This had better work!
And fyi, I didn't have antivirus turned on. - MueRAspirantI've had the same issue (though on an Ultra 6). Whenever I see this happening, top also lists a large number of btrfs processes causing wait states (along with a very active readynasd process). It's as if the raid can't keep up with the file copy.
- davexyzAspirantI have this issue as well on a RN104 with 4*4TB hard drives a which was 75% full. This happened when trying to copy from a USB drive attached to the unit. Moving the USB drive onto another RN104 on the network strangely allowed the copy to the original unit to occur without dropping out.
I have had this issue with my NV+v2 units which was rectified by formating in ext3 until Netgear released firmware 5.38 after 9 monthsleased, factory reset required and associated backup and recopying back then I mistakenly installed the beta firmware 5.3.9 which replicates the original issue. which requires rolling back but also a factory reset etc. To facilitate this I had to get another NAS which a 104 but hit this issue again is a slightly different form. As Muer states there is a high number of processes going on after the NAS gets about 75% full. This seems is related to the linux kernel that Netgear uses and seems to be an issue in the NV+ v2 and strangely is showing now in the 104. I have had 3 cases on this with Netgear one closed by firmware 5.3.8, one was closed without my agreement as the issue is not solved and another is now open for the 104. However I hold no great belief that Netgear have a handle on this issue. One statement from support was "take some files off the unit to allow file transfer". The Unit was only 75% full and it was an 8TB RAID unit - perkijAspirant36 hours to rebuild the array and now I can start to copy files back onto it. Initial test shows no problem copying one large file onto the box but I'm doubting that the problem is fixed.
As suggested in the previous two posts it was like the box just couldn't keep up with the file transfer once the box reached a certain percentage full. I'll post another update in 2 to 3 days once the copy reaches around the 6TB mark which is where it fell over last time. Currently copying up at 31MB/sec.
An additional fyi, I was running firmware 6.1.3. - evan2NETGEAR Expert
Hi Davexyz,
Could you download log from UI and email them to me.
I want to check snapshot status on your RN104. - alexk2013AspirantHi,
Same thing here.
RN104 4x4tb disks x-raid, firmware 6.1.3.
When it reached the 70% utilization and started sending alerts, after while copy
was almost not possible. Now it is not possible. It starts copying at a relative high
speed, then it drops to few bytes/second and then stops responding.
This is completely unacceptable. The disks i have are in the supported list.
Just noticed a firmware update to 6.1.4, but in the release notes there is nothing
about for this major problem.
If there is a problem with this high capacity, just wondering why it is not mentioned
by Netgear.
We all paid for the RN104 (bit too much, i would say) and for the 4tb disks. They are not ......freeware!
:( :( :( - StephenBGuru - Experienced Useralexk2013 - did you contact Netgear support? (support.netgear.com)
- alexk2013AspirantStephenB, what is the reason for contacting support ? Just to hear that i have to reset to factory defaults as they already advised perkij ?
Seems that RN-104 x-raid cannot handle correctly 4x4TB disks, despite that Netgear is having them in the supported disks.
I will simply replace disks with 4x2TB disks and the 4x4TB i will add them in my Thecus N7700Pro.
Also, just wondering, if somebody from Netgear reads the posts. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
I don't know what support will advise you. Neither do you if you don't call them.alexk2013 wrote: StephenB, what is the reason for contacting support ? Just to hear that i have to reset to factory defaults as they already advised perkij ?...
I suspect that they will frequently advise a factory default if they have no other solution - though painful, it often resolves issues. But if enough people report a problem, then their escalations team is more likely to get involved, and properly diagnose it.
I am not seeing clear evidence of that on this thread, I think you are jumping to a conclusion.alexk2013 wrote: ...Seems that RN-104 x-raid cannot handle correctly 4x4TB disks, despite that Netgear is having them in the supported disks...
Even a mod has no idea who reads what.alexk2013 wrote: ...Also, just wondering, if somebody from Netgear reads the posts.
