Serious problem? 1244 reallocated sectors failed smart test
Just received in a Readynas system in the mail today.
Started it up and received the following errors(which are also in the log files)
1. Reallocated sector count has increased in the last day. Disk 4: Previous count: 0 Current count: 1244 Disk 4 did not pass SMART self-assessment test. Please replace this disk as soon as possible. Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk.
2. Disk 4 did not pass SMART self-assessment test. Please replace this disk as soon as possible. Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk.
I have never seen the reallocated sector count go from 0 to 1244 in one day. My other hard drive has like 70 reallocated sectors and grows very slowly and seem to be ok, but this is a lot more reallocated sectors very quickly.
The unit just arrived in the mail today and could this possible have had to do with shock damage from the rough handling from the shipping company ( UPS) ?
Please advise?

Bad drive, possibly from shipping, Get an RMA for Disk 4 as soon as possible.

Personally I would also change the disk with 70 reallocated sectors. If it continues to grow, even slowly, its indication of imminent failure.
BTW, which model and what version of RAIDIATOR (firmware) is installed?

I believe its 4.1.0 on the Readynas NV+
Also, I ran crystal disk info program which told me it was a bad drive, Seatools from seagate both short and long drive test indicated it was a bad drive and Western digital lifeguard disgnostic told me that it was a bad drive on 2 test as well as the initial smart test.
I think its safe to say that the drive is is very bad shape.

Armornone,
Can you clarify NAS model #? Is it a V1 or V2?
Can you also give us disk model #?
I doubt if your F/ware is Sparc V4.1.xxx, as that model type
is End of life.
If bought new, you should be able to exchange with your
reseller within 30 days of purchase.
Reseller may ask for a Netgear case #, and we in Tech Support
would need the NAS system logs.
Regards Marto

The labels are misleading.
