Slow copying speeds

I'm getting very slow writing speeds when writing to my new ReadyNAS NV+

1. RAIDiator version: 4.1.8

2. Performance tab settings:

3. Network switch model (and firmware version):
CBN SVG6540E with router Apple Time Capsule (firmware 7.6)

4. NIC on MacBook Pro:
Broadcom 57765-B0

5. Number of disks and disk models:
2 Disks: WD15EARS-00Z5B1 1,5TB (main disk) & Seagate Baracuda Green ST2000DL003 2TB

6. The read/write MB/sec numbers from drag & drop test:

MacBook <-- Time Capsule --> ReadyNAS via Ethernet:
AFP: average 14,5MB/s
CIFS: average 13,8 MB/s
FTP: average 1,5MB/s

Writing a 4,5GB file to the NAS

  • I've just tried hooking up a disk using USB to the ports in the back of the NV+ and used ssh to copy a file to the NV+

    rsync --progress -ah /USB/file.iso /c/Share/file.iso

The file is a 700MB ISO and had an average write speed of 2,40MB/s.
Also a pretty slow write speed in my opinion.

Would be interesting to know what number you get if you just copy it with cp instead of rsync. What format is the USB drive?
  • Because I have to time it I can't really make it specific, but I guess it's around 5 to 8MB/s, still pretty low no?
    USB Drive is NTFS formatted.

I agree it is pretty slow. 4.1.9 beta is supposed to be faster.

ext3 is the fastest format, though it is harder to read on Window's PCs. Not sure about Mac though.

Congrats on your new NV+ v1 purchase!

I can see that your WD disk is not on the Hard Disk HCL. It could well be the problem and NetGear would deny support to help you troubleshoot performance unless this disk is replaced.

Can you download your logs and check partition.log? If your disks are not 4k sector partition aligned that could be a problem. See http://www.rnasguide.com/2011/06/22/why-you-might-want-to-factory-reset-a-sparc-readynas/

EXT3 drivers are need for Windows and Mac to read EXT3 formatted disks. Neither supports them natively.
  • If I read it right, the discs should be 4k aligned, no?
Also I guess sda is my connected USB disk (because it was gone in the logs when i removed it).

  • There are known issues with the speed of 4.1.8. Try 4.1.9 T2 beta if you feel comfortable running it or even downgrade to 4.1.7.
