Successful upgrade to 6.5.1, couple of issues

I've just successfully upgraged my RN102 from 6.2.5 to 6.5.1. I've held off for quite a while as there's been a few horror stories on here with people having to factory reset / copy all their data off/on etc.

Reading the threads here it seemed that having large numbers of snapshots was the main cause of problems so I made a backup of the system, deleted all snapshots and let it upgrade. Took about 10 minutes and (almost) everything came back working. I had to re-define my backup jobs as the name of my USB drive has changed and I couldn't find a way to edit the old jobs to correct it (All fields in 'settings' were non-responsive including destination path).

A couple of issues :-

1) The backup button on the front panel no longer lights up when it's ready to go.

I used to plug in my USB drive, wait a short while as it was mounted and the button lit up, then I could press it to start the backup job. It still starts the B/U job but I have to guess when it's ready.

2) I can't login to the NAS with a user account. I have a user account defined with read-only access, I used to be able to login to download files when needed. Now the login just fails as if password is wrong. Have deleted/created the account again but still no luck. I see the account deleted/added in the log files but there's nothing about any failed login attempts.

Any ideas?

Hello alanwsg1,

Are you referring to ReadyCloud? You mentioned you upgraded from 6.2.5, I presume you have not upgraded your ReadyCloud account yet. If ReadyCloud is enabled on your ReadyNAS, take note of the ReadyCloud account you registered to it under Cloud > ReadyCloud. This account needs to be upgraded to myNetgear by getting to readycloud.netgear.com. Once it's upgraded, it will be using a myNetgear account that is in an email address format. Once done, go back to the admin page and refresh the Cloud tab, the ReadyCloud account that has been entered should automatically change to the new account once the ReadyNAS receives a signal from ReadyCloud server that this ReadyCloud account is associated with the email address that has been created as you myNetgear account.

See these links, please:

How do I upgrade my ReadyCLOUD account if I do not have a MyNETGEAR.com account?

Please note that if you are going leave ReadyCloud, this will delete the ReadyCloud users you have added to your NAS as well as their home shares, so make sure to always have updated backup.

No, I'm not refering to ReadyCloud - I've updated that to the new 'MyNETGEAR' account and that works fine.

I used to be able to login directly to the NAS with a user account - a bit like login as admin, but instead of getting the Admin page I would just be able to browse and download files from shares that have HTTP access enabled.

Hello alanwsg1,

I see, you are referring to HTTP access to the shares. You might want to check the permissions for HTTP of each share then.

Try accessing share using admin account too first.

Re: Successful upgrade to 6.5.1, couple of issues

The shares I want to access have permission set for 'Everyone' over HTTP to 'Read only'.

But if it was a permissions problem I would expect it to let me login and then present a blank screen i.e. no access to any shares.

But it doesn't allow the login, as if the username/password isn't recognized.

Testing it with the Admin account gets you straight into the admin page.

The shares can then be accessed via shares->browse but obviously I don't want to use the admin account for normal day-to-day access.

Hello alanwsg1,

Have you tried https://<nas ip>/<sharename>?

Ex. https://192.168.168.5/Music

Re: Successful upgrade to 6.5.1, couple of issues

ARGH!!!

I tried "https://<nas ip>/public" and it gave me access to all my file WITHOUT ASKING FOR A PASSWORD.

I tried it on firefox, Chrome and Edge just incase I'd left myself logged-in somewhere, but they all gave me instant access to all my files.

They complained about a bad https certificate but I just said ignore it.

What have I got configured wrong?

Hello alanwsg1,

Can you give me a screenshot of one of the shares'share permission settings you are trying to access via HTTPS? I mean the permission settings of the HTTP of the share.

Re: Successful upgrade to 6.5.1, couple of issues

Well, this is what it looks like now - previously it had HTTP access next to 'Everyone'.

The thing is, this was a result of the upgrade from 6.2.5 to 6.5.1.

I didn't change anything and under 6.2.5 it definitely asked for a password on HTTP access.

Hello alanwsg1,

How about resetting permissions on each share then reconfigure the permissions?

Re: Successful upgrade to 6.5.1, couple of issues

Pretty much what I did, it seems secure now.

The alarming thing is that the upgrade process changed HTTP access to wide open without any obvious warnings.

Hello alanwsg1,

That seems what happened. I will try to find time to reproduce this and see what happens.

Thanks for sharing this. Please feel free to continue posting suggestions, comments and questions about your ReadyNAS.

Re: Successful upgrade to 6.5.1, couple of issues

I am publishing this message in case it assists other users.  I use a ReadyNAS 104 for domestic use.  Following my upgrade to ReadyNAS firmware v6.5.1 and switching to a MyNETGEAR account, I found I could not connect via File Explorer/Network to the ReadyNAS 104 from my Win 10 PC, although other PCs and devices in the house could connect.  I have several drives mapped to the NAS, such as Drive M = ReadyNAS/Music, and these would not connect either.  I could see the NAS via a web browser (Firefox).

I worked out that my PC must have been using a password to connect to the NAS via drive letter or File Explorer, since this PC was the one originally used to set up the NAS and the Cloud interface. Other users are "Anonymous" with no password..   After a little searching, I found the Credential Manager in Control Panel, where under Windows Credentials, I set up a credential for the ReadyNAS with the new MyNETGEAR account username and password.  This solved the problem.  But I noticed there was no ReadyNAS credential there previously.

I would be interested to hear if this is the best approach?

By default, Windows uses your PC login for network shares.  If that isn't accepted by the NAS you are denied access (even if you have anonymous access setup on the NAS,it still will check the user/password it was given).  It is possible the NAS now has a user account with the same username as the PC logon.  Alternatively, there could be something about the PC username/password format that is causing the NAS to reject it.

Anyway, you are correct in thinking that the PC was presenting credentials to the NAS even if there is nothing saved in the credential manager.  The credential manager over-rides the credentials the PC normally uses.

I'd say yes.  The alternative is to change the PC username/password to try and avoid the problem.

Though you might not have needed to use your MyNetgear account credentials.  If the NAS is set up for anonynous access you probably also could have used guest/guest.
