TM Will Not Backup Everything

I have an NV+v2. It previously had 2x500GB drives, which have just been replaced with 2x2TB drives.

My Mac is running OSX 10.8.5

Previously, when implementing TM backups on the 500GB drives, I excluded some items(such as applications) and all worked well.

However, now that I have 2TB drives and am now able to fully back up my primary drive, not everything is backing up. Although I have removed the former exclusions TM is behaving as though those exclusions are still being enabled.

I'm scratching my head on this one, so any advice is appreciated.

Have you tried rebooting your Mac?

Repeatedly, and over several days - but I get the same result.

If I use a hard drive docking station (using one of the 500GB drives), and try the same TM backup process, everything works as it should.

This does not suggest that the issue solely resides in TM.

It is only when the drives are fitted in the ReadyNAS that the problem arises.

So, the 'problem' appears to reside in how TM communicates with the ReadyNAS.

Re: TM Will Not Backup Everything

What version of RAIDiator is on the ReadyNAS?

Have you tried disabling and re-enabling the Time Machine service on the ReadyNAS?

On your Mac have you tried removing the NAS as a backup drive and then adding it back again?

Have you tried disabling and re-enabling AFP and Bonjour on the ReadyNAS?

1) Yes

2) How is this measure achieved?

Re: TM Will Not Backup Everything

Can't remember whether Bonjour can be disabled or not but AFP should show up in the Dashboard as a service that can be disabled and re-enabled.

If all else fails you could try deleting the TM backup and starting a fresh one.

Re: TM Will Not Backup Everything

No, Bonjour cannot be disabled - and I discovered where to disable AFP - but I have now solved the problem without disabling either Bonjour or AFP...

I deleted the file - /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (in my top-level Library folder, not the Library folder inside my home folder, where most user preferences are).

A Spotlight search wouldn't find it, and neither would a Finder search. Instead, from the Finder menubar, I selected Go > Go to Folder, copy /Library/Preferences to the prompt and clicked Go. I scrolled down until I found com.apple.TimeMachine.plist - and I deleted it and restarted my Mac.

Hey presto; on starting TM - and allowing it to report on the size of all the files to be transferred - all the requisite files are now available to transfer.

It's too late in the evening to commence the TM transfer process, so I will start afresh in the morning.

I will report back when it's all completed.

Re: TM Will Not Backup Everything

Following the procedure referred to above my TM transfer was completed without issue.

Sorted.
