TOTAL CRAP! Do not buy ReadyNas Duo!!!

I bought a Ready NAS Duo with 2 x 1TB drives the first one was faulty as the network port was dead.

Here is why the Ready NAS Duo is a pile of crap:

- You'll spend hours of your life screwing about with over technical bullsh!t, settings, software etc etc.
- Transfer speeds are slow
- It takes WEEKS to boot up
- It sounds like a frikin hair dryer
- The Time Machine for Mac client DOESN'T WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a massive deal for me as I bought the device mainly for this reason. Over the last few month I've been watching the time machine run.. no error reported. Today for the first time I needed to restore a file from a few days back. Time Mache just didn't load. I click "Enter Time Machine" on OSX... nothing. Pretty PISSED off about that!!!!!!!!! So I updated the firmware on the box... now the F*CKING thing tells me there are NO backups and its doing a fresh time machine backup of the entire machine.

DISASTER!!!! My Mac contains software development for my entire business. Hundreds of thousands of pounds woth of development done over the past seven years. This device could have totaly buggered me and my business.

So I'm going to throw the f*cking thing in the bin anf buy a Time Capsule from Apple that I can just plugin and TRUST.

Re: TOTAL CRAP! Do not buy ReadyNas Duo!!!

Sorry to hear about your problems as I had similar problems with I first set up my ReadyNas Duo.

If you have an iMac then an Airport Extreme with integral hard disk using Time Machine is by far the easiest way to back up. I started with a Duo and have recently added a PRO 6. However I still use Time Machine for my backups with a separate 2TB hard disk.

Regarding your frustrations, I experienced many when I first purchased my Duo but in all fairness many of the problems were my own making because of the silly mistakes I made. However I persevered with my Duo and loved the experience it gave me. In fact I loved it so much that I invested a huge amount of money to buy a PRO 6 because I needed a X86 server. I now use my PRO 6 to distribute all my music and video files using Squeezebox and Plex and I cannot rate it highly enough. If Apple were to add a App store to the Apple TV so that it could run the Plex client then that would be the icing on the cake.

I think it's fair to say that owning a FileServer / NAS is not for the feint hearted and a certain amount of dedication is required. You will find some incredibly helpful guys on this forum who will I'm sure be willing to assist you, but might I suggest that you adopt a more diplomatic approach.

Regards.

Re: TOTAL CRAP! Do not buy ReadyNas Duo!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was frustrated to say the least when I wrote that. Well after upating eveything and and taking a full time machine backup again I needed to recover a file. Time Machine just doesn't even open. Looks like I need a Time Machine with Raid 1 as this is no good for s business soltion.

Thanks.

Ok when I first got my Ready NAS Duo I think it was bad timing.. No Lion support, the hard drives I had weren't supported and the first unit was faulty. I'm giving it another try now the OS has been updated. I'm sure it will be fine now.
