Unable to activate SMB on Readynas 102
Hi there, I need some urgent help as I recently hard reset my Readynas 102 and while this process went ok and i reinstalled the 4.5TB of data I am now unable to activate SMB as a service.
I have read a lot of 'how to rectify this' posts on the community and searched extensively too. What i have done so far (which hasnt solved the issue):
- Defined through SSH that my smb.service Failed with result 'exit-code'
- Defined that it Failed to start Samba SMB Daemon
- Based on others having the same issue, Ive done an OS Reinstall on my system (which didnt rectify the issue)
Can anyone advise how to solve this WITHOUT having to do a full factory reset on my machine which i literally did only 2 weeks ago and it was painful due to so much data.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Unable to activate SMB on Readynas 102
Hi @phs989, you could downgrade or upgrade the firmware.
Depending on what OS-release you currently have installed you need to decide, what is possible. Please read the firmware release notes of the concerned releases for further information (https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Announcements-Stories/bd-p/readynas-release-notes). If both is possible, I would first downgrade and evaluate the result. If there is no improvement, you can upgrade then following the recommended sequence of new releases.
If you upgrade before trying to downgrade, depending on the release level you might not be able to downgrade.
You could also try beta software in the end finding the release notes here (https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Beta/bd-p/readynas-beta-releases).
Good luck with fixing and kind regards.

Re: Unable to activate SMB on Readynas 102
Thanks @Retired_Member appreciate your help but i couldnt downgrade - was already on 6.9.4 Hotfix 1 - so managed to upgrade to the Beta and now on 6.9.5 RC1.
Unfortunately the SMB is still not working and when i run a status command via SSH get the below. Any other help would be great!
root@phs989NAS:~# systemctl status -a smb
● smb.service - Samba SMB Daemon

Well, next thing I would do is an OS-Reinstall, but you already did this. However you did this being on 6.9.4HF1, right? So it will not hurt to do that again with 6.9.5RC1, I assume.

Re: Unable to activate SMB on Readynas 102
How full is the OS partition?
Are you seeing the shares you expect when you enter ls /data ?

Re: Unable to activate SMB on Readynas 102
The storage is approx 85% full. Response below for command.
root@phs989NAS:~# ls /data
ls: cannot access '/data': No such file or directory

Re: Unable to activate SMB on Readynas 102
Just realised my storage is named 'READYNAS' not 'data' so ran again and this is correct.
root@phs989NAS:~# ls /READYNAS
home Movies Music Pictures Video

Re: Unable to activate SMB on Readynas 102
Last 2 commands return the below
root@phs989NAS:~# cat /var/log/samba/log.nmbd
root@phs989NAS:~# cat /var/log/samba/log/smbd
cat: /var/log/samba/log/smbd: No such file or directory
Does that seem right?

Never to much, unless you have a wise hand to select portions of it...
Attach as .txt files in case.

The OS partition is 85% full??? Normally it's about 20-25%.
Note the OS is in it's own 4 GB partition - I am not asking about the data volume fullness.
Maybe post the results of
# df // -h
# df // -i

Great, those are normal, so there are no issues related to OS partition fullness.

Does /etc/frontview/samba/Shares.conf look correct?
Are you seeing errors in readynasd.log?

Re: Unable to activate SMB on Readynas 102
readynasd shows that both smb and the itunes service are failing (and of course we already knew that for smb).
Shares.log shows that msdfs root=yes for the movies share. That probably shouldn't be set. Do you know if you enabled DFS for that share?
Do you use macs on your network? If not, disable afp.

NFS is enabled for all shares but i dont recall or know if DFS is enabled.
Yes i use macs and PCs on my home network and using AFP as the default sharing protocol right now in the absence of SMB.

Re: Unable to activate SMB on Readynas 102
Maybe try removing the msdfs root=yes from shares.conf and see if that changes the behavior.
