Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

Hi all, I have the RN102 with two 3T drives on OS 6.2. Each formatted to FexRaid JBOD. I want to expand to the RN104. Will it be as simple as moving the two drives over to the new box or will I have to start the new box off as new?

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

Sorry guys. I found the answer. Looks like a straight forward swap to migrate.

Yes, that migration is easy.

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

Thanks Stephen. Jobs done. Simply shut down the RN102, Removed the drives and placed them in the RN104. Powered up the RN104 and bingo. No settings lost. Even the static IP address, name, alerts and tasks all in tact. Cheers!

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

I am planning to do this also... does anyone know if it matters what revision the firmware is on the two devices?

ie: If I am running 6.1.6 on one and 6.2 on the other?

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

Generally if you migrate disks, The ReadyNAS will try to install the firmware in its flash onto the drives. Since you can't downgrade from 6.2 to 6.1.6 that could be a problem.

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

Thanks Stephen.

In my case, the disks are coming FROM an RN102 with 6.1.6 and going TO an RN104 with 6.2.0.

Would that direction be OK? Is it just like doing a firmware upgrade?

PS - 6.2 is shown on the box of the RN104 but I have never used it to confirm.

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

I have migrated a ton of (older Legacy) units and just to play it safe I upgrade both to the same version before I swap drives. If the new unit is older I use a temp drive to upgrade it. In your case with the new unit being newer can't you simply update the older unit to the same level?

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

Probably simplest to upgrade the RN102 first, but it should be ok either way.

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

CharlesR-

That's a good idea. I am going to upgrade the RN102 anyway, so I guess I can do it first.

However, I am not 100% sure I know what firmware the RN104 is running... I am only going by what is on the box.

I guess I can
-put a temp drive into the 104 to see what firmware it has
-upgrade the 102 to that version
-then move the disks

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

I am rethinking this.

I see a lot of issues when people upgrade from 6.1.x firmware to 6.2.x firmware.

Are the freezing issues common in 6.2.x with an RN-102/104?

Are the solvable? Some threads seem like they were never solved...

Thanks,
SteveG

I don't have a lot of time to troubleshoot a freezing issue.

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

Most users systems are running fine, but some have had issues.

6.2.3 beta has helped most affected users. We are still working to resolve the problem for some users.

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

Thanks... what would you guess my odds of upgrading with no issues?

I understand its a complete guess, but your guess would be a lot better than mine 🙂

Most likely you will be fine.

Do you have a backup?

Re: Upgrade from RN102 to RN104

Mdgm-

Of course... but I don't want to have to reload 3TB of info and sacrifice the current reliability I have (I have no freeze-ups, etc.)

I think I will risk it. I'll let you know how it works out afterwards.

Thanks again for all your help!
