Upgrade path for ReadyNAS NV?

I had a working v2.00c1-p9 and after reading about the RAIDator upgrade for the newest version 4.1.8 sparc it said it is compatible with the NV Sparc hardware. So I downloaded version 4.1.8 and did a local update and it said to reboot to continue so I did a software reboot from the web screen and then it hung on the reboot.

The Power light flashed steadily and in the beginning the ACCT light comes on a couple times and then it just stays with the power light on steady blink and the ACCT light once in awhile which according tot eh FAQs means it hung on the disk recognition.

SO then I try a TFTP boot recovery and it downlands the first two pieces and then the POWER light pulses steadily and the first 2 drive lights light and then then all four and it continues that way indefinitely. I have increased the timeout to 20 and the retried to 10 and same thing.

So the question is was I supposed to upgrade to another version first then 4.1.8 or is there something else going on? Can I go back to a different version and start over there? Will a USB recovery work now?

How do I get my system working again? It's a ReadyNAS NV with 256Mb Ram and 4 500Gb drives.

Try the USB recovery. I try to stay away from TFTP, as USB is more reliable.

USB recovery, which will update the internal flash. Then do an OS re-install to update the disks with that new firmware.

Re: Upgrade path for ReadyNAS NV?

Yeah that worked!

Even though I have the ReadyNAS NV that does not have the LCD Display it went through the same light sequence with the harddrive lights. Something I did not pickup on in any of the documentation is that after you do the OS Reinstall with a newer firmware you have to run the RAIDar to get the system setup again, else it just sits there as I described. I also did a Factory Reset and it came back on my network then allowed me to do the setup from RAIDar.

Anyway it is working again thank you!

This is a good testament to the RAIDiator Firmware, I went from a system made in 06 I think with a v2.00 firmware to the latest and greatest with no steps in between.

OS Re-install resets the network settings and "admin" password. If NAS IP has changed using RAIDar would be the best way to find new IP to connect again.

A factory reset (only works with drives in place of course) wipes all data, settings, everything. After such a major firmware update it is well worth doing if you have the time to backup your data as it gives you a clean setup on the latest firmware and a factory default on 4.1.7+ adds support for 2TB drives that use 4k sectors. Also a factory default on RAIDiator 4.x provides some performance benefits and adds online expansion (can still access data while volume is expanding!).

Yes it is great! A system out of warranty for years and that was sold by Infrant (pre-NetGear acquisition) still continues to receive free firmware updates (4.1.9 is currently in beta: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=59222). Amazing support for such an old product.
